I worked at Great American Group full-time

    Pros

Culture, experience, compensation, travel, and good upper management

    Cons

Work-life balance is the area of most improvement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Focus on work-life balance

Not the best long term career choice. Great for temporary entry positions.

I have been working at Great American Group full-time

    Pros

    - Good for entry level employees or internships. You can learn a lot if you put in the effort as there is a high learning curve at the start. Good stepping stone.
    - Young age demographic with lots of company-sponsored social events.

    Cons

    - Lack of stability. Company is continually changing it's structure and process and as a result layoffs occur frequently.
    - Not much potential for career growth (although they will tell you otherwise). Expect minimal raises if any and promotions only if you network with the right people.
    - Expect to work long hours and sometimes weekends
    - Poor management team

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Reward employees' hard work with pay increases
    - Implement an HR department which actually supports it's employees

I have been working at Great American Group full-time

    Pros

Not much. Company is in a downward spiral. Divisions are sitting around without work and the layoffs started. They start by getting rid of the hard working people while management saves themselves.

    Cons

Lack of promotions. Lack of raises. Company culture is all about money and not about the employees. Executives make a ton of cash and buy fancy cars but don't reward the employees who actually make it happen. If you are lucky to get a raise, it's barely enough to keep up with inflation. The new CFO is taking the company down with him. Seems like a bunch of chickens running around without heads.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be selfish and the company will survive

I have been working at Great American Group full-time for more than a year

    Pros

-Great people in the Needham, MA office
-Not expected to work long hours, just get your work done
-Get the opportunity to look at companies in all kinds of industries and see how they do their operations

    Cons

-Niche industry, focus is on inventory appraisals, so only inventory matters

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Management is great, just need more perks in order to retain employees because most view it as a step towards the next job

I worked at Great American Group as a contractor for more than 5 years

    Pros

They sign some of the largest deals and probably will keep going longer than most in the business.

    Cons

They have some of the worst contractors, managers especially. They encourage extremely questionable business practices and sales techniques and extreme aggressiveness to the point of shocking.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Where to even begin....this section is pointless because no one there listens to advice, especially managers.

I worked at Great American Group full-time for less than a year

    Pros

This is a small company in a niche market. The office is a quiet environment.
    Some people are pretty nice.

    Cons

The company is almost like a "family" mom-and-pop business. If you haven't been there for a while or don't have connections, don't think you gonna make any difference anytime soon.

This is not an environment for serious IT professionals. Their IT group (software) lacks knowledge and experience. The company should obtain better resources.

This is a small company and is cost conscious operation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Use real professional management for HR and IT. This is important.

I worked at Great American Group full-time for more than a year

    Pros

GA is dedicated to their employees and committed to creating a positive work environment. I worked in the Needham office (Massachusetts) for 2 years and had an excellent experience there. My coworkers were great, and management was honest, open, and receptive to feedback. An excellent work environment!

    Cons

Occasional long hours, but this was rare and management actively tried to avoid employees working long hours when possible.

Great American is excellent at what they do, namely, appraisals and liquidations, but it can come at a price

I worked at Great American Group

    Pros

    Great American Group:

    -Hires employees who are hard-working, highly intelligent, creative, and driven, and you can, and most likely will, learn a lot from them;

-Provides opportunities for outside activities including volunteering and company parties.

    Cons

-At times a hard rigidness amongst some of the personnel, with management more focused on the quality of the project and less focused on the quality of life for the employees, particularly in regards to managing projects while ensuring work hours are at acceptable levels (e.g., 8-9 hours at maximum, even during the busiest time periods).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Being periodically in the trenches with employees, and extending more opportunities for learning new skills and tasks.

-Hire more personnel during the busier months who can help out with easier, more entry level tasks on projects. There was a key period when hours that no human being should have to work (between 80 to 90 per week, on average, over nearly a four-month period) were taking place in order to handle the project load that sales personnel were putting on the books. And upper management seemed nowhere to be found. This is karma that no business entity, or it's leadership, can withstand for long.
