I worked at Greenlee Textron full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Highly structured organization. It is very obvious that Greenlee is part of a Fortune 500 company (Textron). If you love metrics, goals, objectives, individual performance plans, then this is your place to work. Goals are cascaded down really well into dept objectives so you'll know exactly what your dept is trying to achieve. If you are a type A personality you will like it here. There are a lot of training opportunities, especially for LEAN and Six Sigma.

    Cons

High turnover and unstable work environment. Greenlee covets college grads for their leadership training program and also has a rotational Black Belt program. Downside is this promotes frequent change in personnel, responsibilities and/or outright turnover. This also promotes a lot of "flavor of the month" projects that usually don't last. There is not a lot of recognition for non-Managerial employees. If you are not a Manager or Black Belt, you really do feel like just a number to Senior Leadership. Employees get their training at Greenlee and then move on to other Textron Business units, especially Bell Helicopter. Others simply grow tired and leave the company to utilize some of the very training and experience that they got at Greenlee.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fresh talent is very important to any organization, but value the current employees you already have. Loosen the belt a little on the Green/Black belt requirements and initiatives. There is a saying that people don't leave companies, they leave Managers. Keep this in mind, and it starts at the very top.

    Pros

Family atmosphere. Great co-workers, strong products brands and manufacturing!

    Cons

Too much work given for the time allowed. Too many competing priorities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Middle management has too much power. Many do not "walk the talk". Scott Hall is doing a great job!

I have been working at Greenlee Textron full-time

    Pros

I thought the pay was fair to the market. Although your money will go a lot further in Rockford, IL

Greenlee uses current business software like SAP.

Since most departments are under staffed because of the last layoffs, you get alot of experience doing alot of different things. Although you'll also have more work.

    Cons

The first thing that comes to my mind is the diversity is terrible there. I would say 60% of the employees are from the rockford area. A lot of the staff have been in Rockford their whole lives. This isn't a huge deal, although it would be nice if you got to meet people from different cultures and backgrounds

Greenlee's career opportunity from a location standpoint are poor. You really only have Rockford, IL if your not in the manufacturing field. Because there is the headquarters in Rockford, IL then 3 manufacturing centers in Memphis, TN, Louisville, KY and Genoa, IL, But if your not in manufacturing/engineering the only place for you is Rockford

I personally have never experience this, although I have seen it a lot . Greenlee employees are quick to throw each other under the bus. Not sure if they fear job security or the wrath from upper management. You'll see the emails people wright to each other CCing in the upper management and think was this necessary.

Greenlee is a yearly goals always make you scratch your head, basically...Spend less, but get better quality, with less resources

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A thank you once in a while would be nice...o and less emails in all caps clearly screaming at people.

    I worked at Greenlee Textron

    Pros

There was room for advancement and strong drive to LEAN/Six Sigma. Excellent industry with market share in key areas. Very stable workforce, with excellent work ethics.

    Cons

Corporate (Textron) mismanagement. Should let each business run independently. Greenlee lost the small/agile ability to adapt and change, when Textron got involved in the business. Look what happend to the fastener divisions after Textron took over - very similar path for Greenlee. Textron will chase the low dollar labor and has hurt them in many of thier companies. Barclay Olson created a World Class environment and Greenlee was the company to beat - now they are struggling to compete in many key areas - including retail.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire good people and take care of them. Too many good people left to go to competitors.
