Great company if your young, overall decent for the economic times

    Financial Counselor (Current Employee)

ProsPTO/Vacation Time. They give you 1 month to utilize as needed.
Its good for younger college graduates within the Generation Y-Z era (young professionals)
Management is tries to be fair and provides flexibility with schedules.
Medical benefits are good along with the 403b Pension plan and 401a Profit Sharing
Continuous education and learning classes for professional certifications

ConsGreenPath will not be able to retain its workforce. Gen Y and Z will only use GreenPath to advance to another career opportunity when the economy gets better. GreenPath will see an increase in defections.

GreenPath doesn't pay enough for the counselors they hire from other companies with experience. They will not be able to retain those career professionals due to deficiencies in opportunities within the organization. If GreenPath hires a counselor with corporate experience, more than likely they will defect when a new opportunity arises or utilize the job only as income to seek other employment. As the years progress, the training department will constantly training new employees. Quality of work will decrease especially as experienced counselors leave GreenPath. Several will continue as the economy improves in 2014.

GreenPath hires people into positions by way of tenure not by qualifications or experience. This is what will cause attrition from their staff at all levels even with the new employees that bring a diverse background of experience. More than likely, unless they are acquinted with a management member, those KSA's acquired will not be utilized.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to seek ways to keep employees engaged and explore retention methods that will help GreenPath to having an experienced workforce that understands the mission and the business. Without addressing retention of Gen Y-Z employees, GreenPath will become a revolving door organization.

    Overall, a good company

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Farmington Hills, MI

ProsOverall, the call center environment allows schedule flexibility by rearranging and switching days without using PTO. The new management tries to be engaging and supportive. There is a fun zone with foose ball and air hockey; however, if you log into a queue, you will likely not use this.

ConsThere are a number of inexperienced people in management who are inadvertently condescending. They may develop over time, but right now it feels like micromanaging. The pay is not amazing, benefits have been reduced and there are times when conflicting messages are communicated. Changes in Leadership are not announced. The Leadership Team does not seem to have a good understanding of operations; this is a major disconnect. How can they effectively make decisions if they do not know their employees and their clients?

Advice to Senior ManagementDevelop your managers and supervisors. Micromanaging is not effective and does not promote employee engagement. Try to truly be flexible in terms of working with employees. Think about how to employ more remote ideas; perhaps allowing time to work in the office and work at home as well.

    Employees first company

    Business Development (Current Employee)

ProsTakes great care of employees. Generous vacation packages, great facilities including gym and cafe. Communication from upper-management downward is improving.

ConsIt seems unless you have a connection with management, chances for promotion are limited. Job performance and qualification does not tend to factor into hiring from appearance.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue working on that communication, and do a better job of seeking out qualified candidates within the company for future leadership positions.

Great work-life balance, great benefits, great co-workers; difficult to move up, heavy politics.

    Financial Counselor (Former Employee)
    Farmington Hills, MI

ProsGreat employee training, very frequent quality reviews. Management listens to employee concerns and suggestions. Great pay, great benefits. Nice building, new equipment, friendly co-workers.

ConsI found it very difficult to move up due to the politics in my department. Those who were social with managers outside of work seemed to move up faster, regardless of qualifications. The rest of us, although perhaps better qualified, could not even get an interview to be promoted. New employees are put on evening shifts and are required to work most weekends.

Debt Management Machine that did not care for employees

Financial Counselor Level II (Former Employee)
    Farmington Hills, MI

ProsYears ago, it had decent benefits. Good package for vacation and medical.

ConsExtremely condescending management. Pushed employees with unrealistic goals. Some depts had "favorites" and did not promote within or ONLY promoted people they liked... Based on "politics" not performance, knowledge or experience. There were three female managers that were always together and always telling each other secrets. They would micromanage everything... Time breaks, time lunches, extreme pressure to sell Debt Management and materials even if the person could not read.... Complaints to HR went out the door the same way it got there. HR did not investigate or do anything about employee abuse. There was verbal abuse and even physical abuse at one point.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt has to be restructured completely. Ensure that management is sympathetic, caring and honest. Have realistic goals. Remember the mission of the company. Stop pressuring so much to even sell books to people that cannot read. You lost a lot of great employees because you did not care about employees. You had very irresponsible management.

Great pride in telling people that I work for GreenPath Debt Solutions!

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsI've worked for many companies over the years, and in some instances, I took a job for the $$$ instead of the mission.
GreenPath is one of the leading credit counseling groups in the country and I'm happy to go to work every day.
The people that work here take great pride in helping people with their debt.
Leadership is giving more breathing room, when it comes to new ideas from staff and truly wants to listen and act on suggestions. Good balance of work/family life. Generous with time off. Good training program for new staff.

ConsThe pay is somewhat competitive, but remember, It is a non-profit. If you are working just for the salary, then you are going to have to decide what is best for you.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep the open lines of communication, keep reaching out to staff in the headquarters and field offices. Keep asking for suggestions and advice.

Best job yet -- This is a great place to work!

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Farmington Hills, MI

ProsGreenPath so far is the best place I have ever worked. The people are great and the culture of the company is relaxed yet serious. The employee culture thrives on working in team environments and openness in communication that has to be experienced. I find myself not being pestered to complete meaningless tasks, but instead given the room to breathe and really excel on larger big picture items that will really make a difference in the long haul of the company.

ConsFood in The Park is too good and easy to gain a few pounds! Actually don’t have a con for this company – working here is great!

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to keep open lines of communication with the everyone. Really appreciate the fact we can easily approach anyone on the lead team for help and advice.

    Solid Mission Driven Company

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Farmington Hills, MI

ProsGreenPath understands the balance between work and life very well. They care about their employees and have been working over the past year to improve employee satisfaction. They offer ongoing training for personal and professional development. Most of the managers and supervisors actually care about their employees. Great internal customer service translates into excellent external customer service.

ConsThe call center environment can be a difficult one. Recent management changes have definitely improved the situation. Moving out of the call center into admin is difficult because of the shear number of qualified individuals for each open position and the fact that employees in administrative positions tend to stay with the company for long periods of time.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to listen to your employees and offer opportunities for growth and development. Improve the leadership and management skills of your frontline supervisors as this is the number one predictor of job satisfaction.
