Only if you really believe you in the issues and you can't pay your rent

Frontline Canvasser (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at Greenpeace part-time for more than 3 years

ProsExtremely valuable learning skills. You can get any sales job in the world after a few years of frontline. A lot of organizational and team/individual support.

ConsAlcoholism. Feeling completely dead inside.

Advice to Senior ManagementAlways focus on the best.

Good job if you're young

Canvasser (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Greenpeace part-time for more than a year

ProsThis is a good job for those in high school or college and living at home.

ConsYou only get a very low base hourly rate and then make the rest based on the number of people you can sign up. This is frankly too much of a risk if you're trying to support yourself in NYC

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't treat canvassers like they're disposable.

Help Save the World (if you're good at sales)

Frontliner (Former Employee)
Denver, CO

I worked at Greenpeace full-time for less than a year

Pros* Help save the world
* Interesting, well-informed & friendly coworkers
* Feel good about the work you're doing

Cons* Must meet fundraising quota to stay employed
* There is NO leeway if you don't meet the quota, even if you're in a bad area (for instance a college campus where few people have much disposable income) or there's some unusual circumstance preventing most people from stopping to talk (for instance a huge convention)

Advice to Senior ManagementI was not fully informed in my interview of the terms of employment; i.e. that if I did not sign up three new members in the first three days that my employment would be terminated. I found out later that the man who interviewed me is NOT the usual interviewer, and the usual interviewer does fully inform potential hires of all the particulars, so my experience is probably unusual.

A really amazing way to build new skills and meet new people.

Team Leader (Current Employee)
San Jose, CA

I have been working at Greenpeace full-time for more than a year

ProsThe office environment is very much like a family. You can tell that everybody is there for the right reasons and it makes it easy to go to work. Working for a completely independent non profit is quite fulfilling and when you actually see the genuine change occur on behalf of hard work put in, there is no greater feeling in the world.

ConsYou end up getting so immersed that you can easily ignore your outside life.

Advice to Senior ManagementOverall just continue to be awesome.

Saving the environment one polar bear at a time...

Frontline Team Leader (Former Employee)
Honolulu, HI

I worked at Greenpeace full-time for more than a year

ProsYou get to work for a great cause, and they get you really excited about saving the environment, Good pay, and sometimes they give you surprise paid time off. Really awesome coaching methods, and you really bond with your team.

ConsThe weekly quota which you must meet if you would like to keep your job. It's extremely stressful not knowing whether you'll be able to keep your job. A lot of people hate on canvassers, and are unnecessarily rude or mean to you. You get really depressed when you find out how little people care about the world.

Advice to Senior ManagementMaybe come up with a better system for the quota and/or keeping a job.

Absolutely terrible experience.

Frontline Canvasser (Former Employee)
San Jose, CA

I worked at Greenpeace full-time for less than a year

ProsWork with hard-working people... that's about it for the positive.

ConsTerrible. Terrible. You stand outside grocery stores and get glared at by hundreds of people. You can't even tell people about the fundraising because before you open your mouth you get cussed out and yelled at and everything else imaginable. My first day, two people quit in the spot. I was so stressed that I quit after day two. I am an extremely hard worker but it had to be the most miserable and degrading job that I have ever, ever, ever had in my life- and that's coming from someone who used to be a waitress at a 24 hour place.

Advice to Senior ManagementDuring the interview process inform your prospects the reality of the job. That they'll be mostly at grocery stores, and that they'll be around people who have heard it hundreds and hundreds of times, and let people know just how brutal it really is.

Fun summer job, but the lack of job security makes it hard to take it seriously long-term.

Canvasser (Former Employee)
Philadelphia, PA

I worked at Greenpeace

ProsAwesome coworkers, no dress code, meeting tons of cool people, not having to get up early or work late, doing something good for the plant

ConsMeeting quota, meeting quota, dealing with rude people, meeting quota, working in all types of weather, meeting quota, and meeting quota!

Advice to Senior ManagementI would have loved to keep this job if I didn't have to constantly worry about not meeting quota and getting fired. It seems like a huge waste of resources to keep training people due to the high turnover rate, when you could keep your good canvassers if only they had a little more job security.

ProsIf you're super left, super bold and stoked on the planet...go for it. The people you work with are amazing. It's like a family.

ConsPolitics, religious conflict, people are mean to you
