I have been working at Grinnell College part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Close professor and student interactions. High endowment allows for amazing experiences in the middle of a corn field

    Cons

Extremely liberal campus, but there is rarely any real activism.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find ways to reduce the cost of the education providing for a more accessible tuition for middle America.

    I worked at Grinnell College

    Pros

Great colleagues, interesting students, nice pay. Also, really enjoyed the time off package.

    Cons

Location is the biggest downfall. Also, many of the facilities are behind.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Grinnell College full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I have enormous flexibility, a fantastic boss, and the ability essentially choose what I work on during the day. I work with easy-going people who take their work seriously but have fun doing so. Overwhelmingly I have been treated fairly in all aspects of the work I do, and for the most part feel appreciated. I have had the opportunity to work in many departments, and have enjoyed that freedom.

    Cons

There is a huge separation in how staff and faculty salaries are handled. While it is likely necessary, that doesn't ease the emotional pain of seeing faculty receive 5-6% raises and staff receive 1-2% raises. Core benefits are outstanding, but there are some benefits that are not evenly applied across the institution. Things like summer 10-hour, 4-day work weeks are offered to some but not all departments. Some but not all departments have a dress code. Some but not all employees are encouraged to take advantage of professional development and wellness benefits. Management is very uneven. A few amazing managers/leaders, and a lot of really bad managers/non-leaders in leadership positions. Almost no room for career growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop talking, and start doing. Leadership seems paralyzed by the thought that the faculty or students will get upset with any decision (staff opinion outside leadership is discounted entirely). Require accountability at all levels of leadership. Implement a management training program. Encourage professional development outside of learning how to use technology. Develop a culture of continuous improvement rather than rote once a year employment reviews.

I have been working at Grinnell College full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

If you like the small town feel, the city is awesome. The people are welcoming and helpful. The benefits received at Grinnell College are very good, but also comparable to other college/university work.

    Cons

The current president/Office of the President is mismanaging its people. They have spent over a million dollars on three separate outside consultants that all told them that the leadership is causing the current problems, and they did not listen. Employees fear for their jobs due to seeing others blamed and fired for no reason. They have tried to outsource crucial departments to disastrous consequences. Morale is at an all time low. Even the student government is upset with the "bulldozer tactics" of this administration. All but one Vice President has quit since this president took over. There are massive resignations of key members of staff. HR has no idea what they are doing and have been sued. The pay scale is low, even for Iowa.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This president needs to step down and take his closest administration with him. It will take a new president a couple of years to correct the damage currently being done.

I have been working at Grinnell College full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits. Great support staff coworkers. Decent pay. Nice facilities to work in. Lots of free events to attend and free use of the state of the art fitness facilities.

    Cons

Severe senior leadership problems. Low morale in many departments due to extreme salary disparity. Definitely a place where who you know gets you somewhere. Overworked, and they are still getting rid of people by saying they aren't needed and then sparsing out work to others who can't even get their own work done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop talent from within and quit bringing high salary out of state workers in to fix problems. It hasn't worked in the last 6 years.

I have been working at Grinnell College full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits. Great co-workers. Working with the students is satisfying.

    Cons

Horrible salaries with zero to low annual increase (did not even give raises equal to the inflation rate). Most employees are overworked. Unfortunate choice for President. He has not lived up to the hype of when he was hired.
