    Pros

Great small store, quick turnover rate resulted in quick progression through the ranks. Learned everything fast with hard work being rewarded.

    Cons

Small stores build work relationships easily. Sometimes creates a difficult to work in environment, scheduling is done a week in advance due to unreliability with new fresh employees often working their first job.

    Advice to Management

My advice to management would be to continue with you are doing, the job was great and I appreciate everything I have learned from it.

    Pros

It's great working at a place that gives people quality service and product for a better price; people love it.

    Cons

Sometimes you run into shady customers and employees, since low income stores often attract low income people.

    Advice to Management

Be careful to screen and hire only the best employees, to try and avoid the low income store stigma.

    Pros

Operators are in it for their own money first - employees are a v distant 2nd. Good first job but don't make a career of this - you simply can't.

    Cons

Lots of family working in stores. Dealing with nepitism and undeserving family gets tiring. Lot of work for little pay and you can only move up so high. You will hit a ceiling at one point and need to move elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

    Treat employees better.

I worked at Grocery Outlet part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Cheap Prices, Simple, straight forward selection, and a tight-knit team. Generally flexible around people's schedules, even though more team members could increase flexibility.

    Cons

Some of the worst, most processed food on earth. Everything from the produce, the non-perishables, frozen food, and commodities was expired, damaged, or of the worst processed, no-name brands you shouldn't trust.

I worked a part time job as a closer/bagger, and the lack of adequate cleaning gear, safety precautions, and general hygiene made me never want to shop there. The only "reliable" item was beer or wine.

Additionally, there was pressure on doing the most amount of work with the fewest amount of employees, which is never, ever a good business model. No benefits at all, no healthcare, discounts, or paid sick days.

    Advice to Management

Grocery Outlet needs a re-invention. Follow Whole Foods, Metropolitan Market, or PCC. Cheaper never works over the long run, and you are you biggest enemy when it comes to competing, with a higher-end product.

    Pros

Co-workers are amazing -- fun worker environment, from baggers to the managers. Build relationships with customers, 99% are regulars. Ability to branch out, help other departments, despite official title -- depending on the day. Good summer, or at least short-term, job. Gain 40hrs/week quickly with o of work. Quirks and fun! We're all fun and crazy here!

    Cons

Owners are good at numbers, but can be bad with people. Schedules are rarely done in a timely fashion. Requests for days are often unfulfilled. Calling in sick, or being sent home sick, more than one day can result in severely cut hours. No benefits. No representation. Mediocre pay -- No union, no pay raise requirements. Little growth capacity. 99% of customers are regulars, remember, so you'll have to deal with the ones you can't stand a lot.

    Advice to Management

Don't pretend to listen. Actually listen.
If the day is busy, don't get after your cashiers for having lines (the customers won't die of waiting).
    Don't disregard requests.
Close on the major holidays -- you're supposed to be family focused.
Get the schedule out on time, our families depend on them to plan life.
Reward employees when they succeed, even if success is small.
Appreciate quirks, it's what makes us, us.
