    A real disappointment!

    Life Safety Consultant (Former Employee)
    Philadelphia, PA

ProsMedical benefits on first day of employment. Their monitoring center is first rate.

ConsManagement is very misleading about the amount of company leads available and the compensation plan which changes frequently. More disturbing is that certain employees are definitely favored and given more leads, and not because they are better closers! Guardian expects you to find most of your own business and yet they have no brand recognition in the market place. They are over-priced and they don't offer much in the range of security products, only G.E. wireless unless they are taking over an existing wired system. You receive training pay for the first six months which starts at $1500 monthly for the first two months, $1000 monthly for the third and fourth months and $500 monthly for the fifth and sixth month. Starting with month seven, you are on straight commission along with a monthly performance salary if you make your self-generated numbers. Even if you hit the lowest tier of four, the performance salary is so small for the following month; it is hardly worth the effort. It is a convoluted plan with so many variables. Management will micromanage your time and yet there is no base salary. It is a high stress environment with the bullying, harassment and insults about performance and sales numbers. To add insult to injury, receiving your pay check is upsetting enough. The bottom line is very little compensation for the amount of prospecting, cold-calling and running all over for the few company leads that you do receive. You will get a lead that is over an hour away instead of one that is only 20 or 30 minutes from your home because they over-hire in certain areas of the three state territory of PA, DE and N.J. Anyone who is a good prospector with a large network of people will not work here because the incentive pay is so minimal.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest more in your employees with a better compensation plan. Give them reasons to want to stay. Be realistic about the market place that you are in - each one has different dynamics. You can't compare Pittsburgh with Orlando or any other area. With so much competition than five years ago including the DIY companies, Xfinity, ATT, ADT dealers as well as ADT corporate and so many others that Guardian is not remaining competitive. Guardian has now fallen to number 10 and will continue to fall in the ratings because you are failing to address the internal problems that exist.

ConsThe general workload and the lack of clear procedure.

Advice to Senior ManagementClean up your processes and make things more transparent.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Pittsburgh, PA

    Good place to work

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Warrendale, PA

ProsNice friendly people, enjoyable atmosphere and working conditions, not micro managed and ability to work with a style that suits you.

ConsDoes not seem to have the desire, management, and drive to become big in this industry. Raises not meeting cost of living and not based on performance. Check the wind gauge for direction of managerial decisions

Advice to Senior ManagementAct upon the common folks advice/suggestions because sometimes it's better than your direction.

Too much going on and no one knows how to manage it

    Customer Service Representative (Current Employee)
    Warrendale, PA

ProsEveryone there is very nice and very helpful.

ConsEverything contradicts itself. As a customer service agent, they have so many procedures for things it is ridiculous. Also when you need help someone will provide you wrong information and then later you get "pinged" for it.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide better management of the company. I recommend dividing CSR work in to different groups, for example having a group do the cancellations, another group the troubleshooting, another group the service calls and another group doing the billing. It is too overwhelming the information for only one person.

    Good for the money

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Warrendale, PA

ProsCompared to other companies, good starting salary
immediate use of paid sick and vacation days
    cheap medical and dental coverage

Consraises are even for everyone, better works earn the same raise as the worse worker
alot of miscommunication between management and employees
some policies and procedures make no sense and only frustrate customers and employees
not all departments are treated the same

Advice to Senior ManagementHold all departments accountable and reward those who earn it instead of everyone.

    Nightmare

    IT Department (Former Employee)
    Warrendale, PA

    ProsCompany had a good reputation

ConsIT Department was run like an SS prison camp. Upper managers were very aloof. People were fired on the spot. Others were trying to get out before they got fired. Very high pressure.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt pays to respect IT staff or they will just leave.

    OKAY Place to Work

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Warrendale, PA

    ProsSmall company
recruit good talent from other similiar companies
    reputable company
many different departments to "try" out
many years of tenure across the existing staff

ConsBenefits/ time off are not competitive- No short term disability
Executive staff takes themselves way too seriously (reserved parking spot, water cooler only in executive wing) no cups for water or coffee for the rest of the staff
    Penny wise pound foolish
    front line employees not recognized

Advice to Senior ManagementAttracting good talent is more than "stealing" managers from other companies- look inside to recruit and promote from within- remember your people are your best resource and it is important to find ways to retain talent. Vacation time is a huge stinger

Great place to work, tough industry

    Life Safety Consultant (Former Employee)
    Charlotte, NC

ProsFantastic support, they do a great job of educating their employees. Instead of just firing low performing reps, they ask what they can do to help, provide all the support and information a rep could ask for. I don't know about the rest of the offices, but the office I worked in was really run well, great communication and support, nice incentives.

ConsCommission plan was never clearly explained, and was very convoluted and complicated. They give you a commission plan, but there are so many variables, it's tough to calculate your pay from one sale to the next.

Advice to Senior ManagementClean up the commission plan, and streamline it. Make it easier for your sales team to figure out how much they can expect to earn from one sale to the next.
