I have been working at Guitar Center full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Discounts are great and you make awesome connections in the music industry. Health benefits and vacation time are available for full time employees, a few paid holidays. There's always room to move if you chose too but you also might be stuck waiting for a long time.

    Cons

Very hard to make a living wage with the commission structure. Assistant managers end up having to do a lot of admin work that keeps them off of the floor. Sales Managers essentially run the store while Store Managers are constantly bogged down on calls. Can be a stressful environment. The company has had 3 CEOs in 3 years which doesn't bode well either.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember that your sales team are on the front lines everyday. Pay them what they're worth.

    Pros

Getting to try out the new gear first!
Management was great and always trying to push you for more
Getting to talk to customers about gear and what they are looking for.
Working with other stores to find the right gear for the right customer.

    Cons

The company is going through a restructure process, this was good for the company and needed to be done. However it has caused some ripples and bad feelings through some of the staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sort out the restructure sooner rather than later.

    Pros

They say your employee discount at which you only get on new gear, and after you've worked for 30 days. After you've worked 30 days, you're so hungry and desperate for hours for survival that new equipment is the last thing you could afford. In my 5 years of management experience in retail, I made exactly 50 cents above minimum wage.

    Cons

I've never seen a company hire and fire so many people in such a small period of time. Extremely unprofessional and hostile environment. I guess what more can you expect from the Wal Mart of musical gear. Thanks for nothing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't blame the new CEO for your meaningless and groundless firing. I was fired recently for no reason other than "CEO cuts." Hello unemployment. I have the entire conversation recorded.

    Pros

Gear discount ( although I hear they're not doing anymore employee discounts), gear knowledge,

    Cons

Terrible management starting from the store all the way up to the top, low pay for the amount of work they expect, terrible benefits, breaks are frowned on by management, their form of training is to threaten you with write-ups, monthly 8am meetings leave you upset and not inspired.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your sales associates, AM's and STM's need more training, show that you care, COMPETITIVE PAY,

    Pros

Great work environment. Coworkers and often store management are like family.

    Cons

Pay. Inadequate information systems and logistics support. Major initiatives forced from the top down with no input from ultimate users. Focus on sales to the exclusion of improvement that could save $$, improve customer satisfaction and employee morale.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Read Lean, Six Sigma, Value Flow Mapping etc. The combination of big and brute force will get you to the top but it won't keep you there when the competition grows thumbs. Ask T Rex.

I have been working at Guitar Center

    Pros

Connections if you're interested in the music industry. Great employee discounts. Flexible with schedule.

    Cons

What makes the Guitar Center that I worked at hostile is the amount of gossiping that goes. I approached my general manager twice about this situation only to be called paranoid. There is no room for advancement. What makes Guitar Center hypocritical is the fact that their rules and protocols are applied only when it's convenient. For example, some people are scolded for being on their phone while on the job, yet others get to roam around freely on their phones while on the job in plain view of the cameras. Though Guitar Center preaches about how important customer experience is to them, their main goal is to sell to every customer. They have a "no customer walks empty-handed" motto. Their motto to employees is "What have you done for me lately?" With this kind of attitude it's no wonder there is such a high turnover rate with employees. I wish I had known this before I applied.
