An enriching work environment is to be found at GAC

Food Service (Former Employee) Saint Peter, MN

ProsBenefits to working at Gustavus are excellent managers, coworkers, and sense of community. With it being a college campus, there are always coworkers willing to help you out in a bind. Management is respectful and leads by example.

Great community with lots of support

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Saint Peter, MN

    Pros-Feeling of campus-wide community
    -Diverse employment opportunities
-Student workers are supported by full time staff and there is an understanding that school comes before work
-Many opportunities for promotion for student workers

Cons-Seems to be bad blood between students and upper management
-Very different atmosphere between faculty and administrators/upper management

    There's no I in Team

    Administrator (Current Employee)

    Pros-Flexible/mobile work environment
    -Great feeling of community
-Campus-wide pride for the greater good
-Benefits, although having recently been slashed a bit, are still quite acceptable for the industry
-Many opportunities to participate in campus discussions outside of the individual department
-Students are friendly, caring and accepting of others, as are staff

Cons-Salaries, in general, are a bit low, but if you are working in education for the money, you are in the wrong industry
-Sometimes upper management/officials of the college can seem difficult to reach
-There is a lot of focus on "bottom lines" and not enough focus on ideas that cannot be fiscally measured

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to listen openly to all professors/administrators/support staff and engage them in open conversations to help them (and the college) thrive.

It was negative with a severe lack of communication between senior admin and faculty

Instructor (Former Employee) Saint Peter, MN

ProsSmall community, both at college and town.
The college had good benefits, including retirement benefits. It was. Typical course load for instructor position.

ConsSmall community, both at college and town.

Salary was not tops. It wasn't low, but it was asking a lot for the position.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake full time faculty's concerns seriously, regardless if their rank. Provide feedback, and do it early and often, and make it constructive.

    Dear old GAC

Fundraiser (Former Employee) Saint Peter, MN

ProsWorking with and for Gustavus students is a very rewarding experience. The energy they create around campus usually overshadows the complacent non-profit lifers that can keep the college in a rut.

ConsA portion of faculty, staff and administration are content to do things the way they've always been done rather than attempt to continuously improve the college. Collaboration is embraced by some employees, but certainly not a majority.

Advice to Senior ManagementSeek out constituency input and act quickly upon it. Bring new, collaborative blood into areas across campus to help break down walls within and between faculty, staff and administration.
