I worked at H.C. Starck as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

It is a secure position in a specialty business that offers an interesting look into other industries and good career advancement opportunities. Decently run company with acceptable pay and stress levels.

    Cons

The company does have some short comings in quality that put it in the middle of the pack, and it felt like we were playing catch-up to others in the industry as often as we paced with them on advancements in material requirements.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need a better direction and more well defined goal setting processes to improve productivity and results.

I worked at H.C. Starck full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

When I started the US division was profitable and the outlook was up. The US Management team were strong and the rank and file employees were motivated and dedicated.

    Cons

US Management was changed without explanation and new ones appointed by Germany. The business fell apart and the trend globally for all divisions has been and continues to be dismal. The Board seems clueless on making a proper decision and the investors seem unlikely to step in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Complete turnover in the Board and an overhaul of company values. If this does not happen soon there will be total failure.

If they were simply selling widgets, they would have been out of business a long time ago.

    Pros

Some of the people are nice and the campus is attractive, safe, and secure.

    Cons

The management is non existent and the training is even worse. There is no training. They put you on a job and expect you to know everything from day one. Other employees can be vile and competitive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start a training program for your employees and demand that the workplace become a more inclusive, team oriented environment.

I have been working at H.C. Starck

    Pros

Good benefits. Good people to work with.

    Cons

Owned by venture capitalist with very short term goals. No investing in people or technology for the future. Mixed signals as to present and future prospects. High turnover, voluntary and otherwise.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Single, concise and understandable strategy. Better and consistent communications. Improved future vision. More concern for employees.
