    Pros

Great company values and culture. Potential growth for right candidates with outgoing, can do attitude.

    Cons

Limited work life balance. Weekends and holidays are busiest times so. Your experience will depend directly on a particular store's director. Bad director can make the job a nightmare.

    I worked at H E B full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Experience. Their manager training program is one of the best I have been , and I have been through several.

    Cons

The pay was deplorable for management, but I highly suspect that they were just not willing to pay more because a) I am a woman and b) they don't understand how to run a profitable nutrition department

    I have been working at H E B part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Often flexible with time off requests
Upper management very accessible and open to concerns from the staff
Great benefits and 401k for those who qualify

    Cons

Short staffed, especially in the pharmacy
Sometimes there is a disconnect between management and what is happening to partners. It often seems management is more concerned with meeting unrealistic goals than keeping partner morale up.

    I worked at H E B part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Fairly Flexible hours, Great training and a fun workplace environment. They are a great company and seem to really care about their employees.

    Cons

Can be hard to change departments if you want to do something different. It depends on how much favor you have with the manager of that dept.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think the training is great but wish it was a little shorter. It can be hard to change departments. It seems that it is based on who you know rather than your experience or qualifications.

    I have been working at H E B full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Discounts on own brand products, pretty good insurance, decent pay, and paid vacations (for full time). Plenty of opportunities to move around inside the company, and the majority of departments have flexible scheduling too.

    Cons

The cons are the same basic cons of any job....you can't always choose who you work with, and the further up you go, the more say the company has about where you go.

Current Employee - Have Had Several Different Areas I Worked In~ in Austin, TX

    I have been working at H E B full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Has benefits(insurance and 401k retirement plan). Managers are treated well.Company does very well financially but does not filter that down to the lower employee much. Treats customers well but not low level employees.

    Cons

If you are a regular employee, management will find almost any excuse to write you up and get rid of you if they don't like you. They find little things and love to demean the regular employee. They are very unjust in their treatment. They preach that everyone counts~ but it's obvious that they don't believe that by their treatment of low level employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have had 2 great managers in my 8 years of employment at HEB. Most were average but several(4 or 5) were extremely unjust in their treatment of employees, writing them up for little or small reasons just so they could get rid of people they did not like or want working there. It is a shame to have people in charge who are unjust and it happens far too often at this company.
