    I have been working at H E B part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I love the flexibility, the pay is decent, unless you plan to move up with the company & the 10% discount is fun especially when the company gives free items.

    Cons

Too much favortism, the service area (cashier, PLAs, CSA,CSR, etc) turnover rate is high. Managers come & go.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have held a lower-level position once before please act like it. You are no better than the cashiers, PLAs, CSAs, etc. your title just changed.

Current Employee - Central Checkout Manager in Austin, TX

    I have been working at H E B full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

As a Central Checkout Manager you are not salary. This means you are never worked over your 40 hours per week.
The founding family truly cares very much about the well being of all of the partners and the community.

    Cons

Salary is not equal to what other companies pay for equal work.
Upper management treats the Central Checkout team as if they are bothersome children. No respect for the position and always treated a if we are assistants not actual managers.
Always being asked to do too much with too few resources.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take time to show appreciation to your managers.
Treat all members of management as equals.
Get to really know your managers; who they are, their experience and where they want to go in the company.
Give the Central Checkout team a small budget that will allow us to show our partners (carryouts, baggers & cashiers) how much they are truly appreciated for all of the long hours and hard work they give.

    I worked at H E B

    Pros

Semi-good management, depending on who you report to and what district you work in. Fairly good company culture.

    Cons

Too many kiss-ups in management of privately held and cultured regional owners. Adamant resistance to unionization and descriminating practices against whites in favor of cheaper, more-obediant Hispanics. Tolerant to illegals in droves. Very little recourse if management decides they want to gang up on you. Basically, you have no rights unless you kiss-up totally to dictates of management. At anytime, you can have multiple members of management conspire to eliminate you if they so choose.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Public ratings of your firm in media are grossly inflated. You are not everything you're cracked up to be.

    I have been working at H E B full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Special Partner discounts, weekly free, usually "new" items. Flexible Hours. Ability to move up just as fast and much as you want depending on your self motivation. Ability to find where you belong, department wise. Benefits. Partner Bonuses. Free Flu Shot. :) HEB does have a motto. . .(H)ere (E)verything Is (B)etter and Because People Matter.

    Cons

I don't think there are many cons, except improving on making things that are good and making them great. Noticing the knowledgable partners who do more while questioning and removing other who don't meet that "HEB" standard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Acknowledging the hard working partners and listening to them when they have something to say.

    I have been working at H E B full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

It is a pleasure to work for a company that truly puts "do the right thing" into its decisions. From Partners to customers to suppliers and contractors, HEB thinks about the end game before deciding the strategy.

    Cons

Retail has its challenges. The customer comes first, we are here to serve. That means that you must find your way to the position that works for your lifestyle. We have everything from carry outs to scientists, we are more than a grocery store. There are positions in Manufacturing, Warehousing, and Transportation as well as Procurement, Research and Development, you name it. Follow your passion, there is probably a spot in this company for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    I have been working at H E B

    Pros

HEB is an awesome company to work for. They are very family oriented. There is no limit to what one can do, if they are willing to work hard and show they want to learn. Great pay, great benefits (insurance, 401K, vacations, holidays, etc.) I started part time and made full time very quickly. They are really great for older workers, no discrimination of age or even special needs. They are very caring for their partners & community.. I love my job at HEB and do not look forward to leaving when I retire.

    Cons

Not in any other states, except Texas & Mexico. I really think they need to expand to Tennessee & Missouri.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work, consider opening in other states.
