I worked at H&R Block Canada

    Pros

Great insight into personal and business income tax career. Flexible working hours. Hands on courses and good training offered every year.

    Cons

Late working hours and wish they offered to take corporate tax courses as well. Wish they other types of tax training.

    Pros

Company well known to public and clients have confidence to your work. Good second job as you can work in the evenings and weekends with reasonable pay.

    Cons

Company expects you to follow the rules which you might think that they are not the best considerations to the clients.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

employees need more support at the store front.

    Pros

You get to learn a lot about something as useful as taxes. You will file yours and some of your family and friends return for free. You chose your timings. You can work full time some where and work only weekends here.

    Cons

cheap company, very low pay scale. Bad policies regarding pay like if you are one minute late in entering your time, they will deduct 15 minute pay. Pay almost stay same the next year, just raise by few cents. Earn thousands of dollars because of you but pay you peanuts in the name of commission and salary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Rude Management.

    Pros

Got a free class in Taxes. Good opportunity for old people or ESL students.

    Cons

Mandatory attendance to insanely boring corporate lectures. Terrible rate of pay. Was advised schedule was flexible, however management would not commit to full time schedule nor would allow me to work part-time. All ugly females in entire region. "3 weeks" of training turned into 12 weeks with only a few hundred dollars income to show for it. Not a significant source of income.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No advice would help. Would rather be a customer than an employee.

I worked at H&R Block Canada part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great learning experience. Class materials are organized. Always something to learn in the first 5 years. No-blame policy on worker's faults.

    Cons

Pay is low. Hard to get any hours after tax season. The more years you work, the more you gain the insight of the dark side of office politics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop raising the fees year over year. It doesn't make sense to raise fees by 10% each year when the inflation rate is only 2% and the client base keeps shrinking. Customers will lose loyalty eventually.

    Pros

Seasonal, some flexibility in hours, lots of night and weekend hours available, makes a good second job to bring in some extra money.

    Cons

Poor communication from upper management, poor planning, increasing prices without demonstrating value added services to clients. Give away tax software online for free and then question office performance in run down buildings in crappy neighbourhoods.

I have been working at H&R Block Canada part-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The tax preparers and the clients are terrific. The people that you get to deal with on a daily basis are fantastic. The tax knowledge base is great. A great start if you are looking for part time work

    Cons

Hours during the tax season can be really crazy but as soon as the season ends there is nothing.- zero support from district management. They cannot be counted on to back the preparers up if there is a problem with harassment. Loyalty counts for very little in this company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look after the tax preparer - they are the face of the company and need to know that they are appreciated. Listen to what they have to say. Upper management needs to pay more attention to the front - line preparers and back them up.
