10 Month seasonal employees are treated as second class

    Seasonal Full Time (Current Employee)
    Kansas City, MO

ProsOffer good experience to get another job at a different company. work environment is casual even if in a stressful department. Lower management is good.

ConsSeasonal Employees have been stripped of almost all benefits. No Health Insurance, No Holiday, Sick, or Vacation pay (apparently not allowed to get sick during 10 month employment). Company spends money to throw launch parties for full time employees but leave the seasonal employees who worked on the project out in the cold. Spent huge amount of money on fitness center only to allow permanent employees to use it (and it is not free). Pay is about 10K below average.

Advice to Senior Managementstop treating the seasonal employees you depend on so badly. Some equality between seasonal and permanent would go a long way to keep some seasonal employees around to create a core workforce

ProsVery flexible work hours. Pay increases as years of service, and level of achievement increase.

ConsCompensation is based on your level of achievement. Entry level pay is minimal. It has been decreasing year after year.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry walking in our shoes at the tax desk before you enact petty rules.

Office Manager is a decent seasonal job.

    Office Manager (Current Employee)
    Columbus, OH

ProsYou receive extensive training and the people are true professionals. I was given all of the tools necessary to be successful.

ConsThere are numerous and quite pointless conference calls and staff meetings. It is very fast paced, and you must be prepared to jump into the fire almost immediately upon opening the doors for the season.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus some training more specifically to operating the office and reduce the number of meetings.

Has a lot of room for improvement.

    Tax Professional (Current Employee)
    Tampa, FL

ProsGreat training, good coworkers, great support from coworkers. It is rewarding to help the clients get the maximum refund or pay the least taxes legally allowed. Challenging work.

ConsManagement expects you to work 70 to 80 hours a week during 5 to 6 weeks of the 17 week season. Then 20 hours during the rest of the season. commission per return is reduced each season and they want you to up sell peace of mind and Refund Anticipation Checks. Has not changed much in the past decade.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagers, DM and RM) should be required to manage a tax office and take the Basic tax course. Hiring retail experienced managers does not work in this environment. Either they don't have a clue or will try to micro manage all the offices the same way when they have different demographics. Plus, the RMs never stay more than a year or two. Branch managers usually don't have any management experience and don't understand the business. Need to be more concerned with the boots in the offices not opening banks or other businesses. CEO turnover is high. Training material and methods are outdated.

Love the flexibility but the upper management is out of touch with its people

    Office Manager I (Former Employee)
    Kingston, NY

ProsFlexible scheduling, easy to work around other obligations, great people to work with in the office, lots of others to help you out when you need it.

ConsUnrealistic marketing expectations, unwilling to stick to a plan, constant changes, compensation is terrible! Not paying people what they are worth. Too much has been taken away from employees and there seems to be low morale because there is a disconnect between the people on the ground and the people in the ivory towers.

Advice to Senior ManagementReform the compensation plan. Pay your managers a decent wage and make all of them salaried. Stop focusing on return counts and focus on service and quality.

More and More required with little reward.

    Director (Former Employee)
    Kansas City, MO

ProsFor the most part, there are great people at this company. If you have a passion to help people in the field, you will feel a great sense of stisfaction.

ConsVery little down time, work-life not balanced, employees not clear on promotion strategy or success criteria.
Direction of company not clear to most.

Advice to Senior ManagementWalk the Walk. Get back in touch with what the company was founded on.

H&R Block does not listen to their employees. Prices are to high.

    Tax Professional (Former Employee)
    Greenville, SC

ProsExcellent computer programs for doing taxes. Most of their employees are great.

ConsCost if returns are too high. Cannot build a clientele consistently year after year. Fifty percent of my clients
    complain about the cost.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you have a different background than Accounting, management will treat you like dirt. They will not hire
you to work past the tax year. During the year, you can learn more about taxes and the audit process. But you cannot have a different background. Even though you might have more experience than say a first or second year person. If you don't have that accounting background you will not get hired by some your District Managers.
