I have been working at H&R Block

    Pros

    Cons

Only seasonal from January to April, unless you are a manager.

  2. Not what it use to be. Okay for learning tax preparation if you actually apply yourself.

    I worked at H&R Block

    Pros

If you apply yourself and take all the classes and hustle and develop clients you can make some money. Just don't expect anything your first year. You are (or were) on a flat fee of minimum wage or close to it.

    Cons

Over the years the company has been giving less to employees and punishing the old timers. Talented people end up leaving and people who are left are over-worked and underpaid. With the shift to the web they are making things tough for an employee to make money.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give better compensation to your staff.

Good people in the field. The core values established over 50 years ago by Henry and Richard are still alive in the tax offices.

I have been working at H&R Block (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent training programs and educational opportunities.

    Cons

Home office is not supporting tax pros. Bringing out a new software platform that tends to be jumbled at best and requiring us to prepare returns that have to be intensely scrutinized. HR and payroll has been inept in reporting revenue produced by Tax Pros. Very disjointed and inaccurate. Management has been keeping shortcomings close to their chest and are focused more on gimmicks to get new clients. Existing clients are rightfully asking why there aren't any perks for returning customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clear the air with your tax pros and address the issues they face while dealing with clients.

I have been working at H&R Block part-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Unlimited (almost) free education, many great co workers, chance to form long term relationships with clients

    Cons

Constant shifting of business focus to other things than doing tax returns. IRA, home mortgages, debit cards, credit cards, identity theft guard (but only for taxes), every year it's something different.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on strengthening the core business. Stop asking for time wasters like checking off a "tick" sheet of whether non tax things were done on a daily basis.
