    Pros

I was with HBE for numerous years and it was a worthwhile experience. Now, HBE has announced that they are no longer seeking new projects but are going to complete current California Projects.

    Cons

HBE is currently advertising for positions in Construction and as Architectural Draftsperson ( Contract Basis ?). With knowledge that a formerly thriving business is now winding down?

    Advice to Management

HBE Management should have fulfilled years ago the discussions of selling to employees and seeing that a once thriving business could have continued with a new leadership to adjust to current trends rather than no progressing.

    Pros

    Potential for very high earnings

    Cons

FSK (Owner) will do everything he can to drive you out before you can claim commissions. He believes in the theory of using anyone to attain his objectives and has no problem admitting that he will lie if it serves him personally.

    Advice to Management

Build a culture where your staff can thrive and the company will thrive as well

    Pros

One of the very first Design Build companies, focused almost exclusively on Hospital Design and Construction. Amazing tenure amongst employees. Very clear cut duties and responsibilities.

    Cons

CEO is in his 80's and has stayed too long. Doesn't have a computer in his office, still works off hard Architectural prints, basically has lost touch. Banks are refusing to bond his projects, and prospects are nervous about doing business with a man approaching his 90's.

    Advice to Management

Modernize and convince your CEO to pass the reigns.

    Pros

Just laid off 40 people, and still they are advertising for an arch intern job? Very funny

    Cons

Apply, but you will not be hired, don't waste your time

    Advice to Management

Take down the add, don't waste people's time

    Pros

You do get paid on time and are normally well compensated for your position. Many of the employees are great people and easy to work with, but you are all in the same boat.

    Cons

The basic down side is that your creativity is limited and you are not allowed to express your opinions.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to respect the individual.

    Pros

HBE is a simple place to work, expectations are clear.

    Cons

There are so many people that are willing to throw each other under the bus, the environment is a little dog-eat-dog

    Advice to Management

Be as loyal to your employees as they are to you.

    Pros

Good market niche, good outlook for this type of delivery and market.

    Cons

Every man for himself culture, driven from the top down. No authority, but all of the responsibilty.

    Advice to Management

Recognition is sometimes more important than titles or money.

    Pros

There are a few really good people that work there, some try extremely hard to do their jobs, but ultimately are stopped by the monarchy that exists there.

    Cons

Everything else. From the cut-throat, throw you under the bus mentality of many of the department heads, to the fact that the owner screams and has temper tantrums when he doesn't get his way, HBE is a company that would have been better off if it had been sold, or if the owner would have died, years ago.

    Advice to Management

Get out while you can. The owner doesn't care about you, and for all of you long term employees, you're all saints to have put up with his tantrums for as long as you have.
