I worked at HBOS full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    Edgy
    Pushes boundaries
    Going places
    Place to build a career.
Career development is taken seriously, a lot of opportunities for the right people to move quickly with a lot of support and development.

    Cons

    Too risky some would say!
Unfortunately tainted by the financial crisis. I think it's important to note that a lot of the HBOS values live on within LBG and the new combined company is a great place to be.

  8.

High stress, low pay, poor systems, terrible performance standards model - list list could go on....

    I worked at HBOS

    Pros

If you are really short of cash and need a job they have a high attrition rate at the lower levels and apparently they take pretty much anyone within reason.

    Cons

The targets are fair (specifically excluding the way customer perception is measured), but this may be for the worse. There is a fairly good team attitude.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the new counter system (ICS) and at the very least admit you got it wrong and that the system is a dog.

I have been working at HBOS

    Pros

    quite flexible shift patterns
pay is quite good (if you have worked there 3 years!)
optional benefits as part of your salary package are good
    staff products are extremely competitive

    Cons

no opportunity for advancement if you are not in the management clique
overlooked in favour 'yes men' for promotion even if you are better qualified
targets verging on ridiculous and certainly inachievable for the majority of staff
'sales before service' culture, despite fsa and goverment regulations to the contrary

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managers need to be leaders and motivators, not just agreeing with illegal activities because it gives them a quiet life, stand up against the breaches of FSA/government regulations instead of just agreeing because its easier. Grow up and stop playing with childrens toys at your desks, your in the workplace, not nursery.

  11.

A great place to work if you're interested in retail banking and if you can bear to work outside of London

    • Comp & Benefits
    • Work/Life Balance
    • Senior Management
    • Career Opportunities
Former Employee - Head of Product  in  Halifax, England (UK)
Former Employee - Head of Product in Halifax, England (UK)

    I worked at HBOS

    Pros

    Some really passionate people
The opportunity to work for a major retail banking brand, in one of the more dynamic / entrepreneurial businesses in the industry (despite its size)

    Cons

    Location - Halifax (ugh)
A real imbalance in power between P&L centres (i.e. products) and the sales network

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leadership needs clear messages and better recognition for *true* stars ... it is important to that staff are recognised, but the value of recognition is debased when everyone seems to be getting a pat on the back for something (normally for just doing their day jobs .. )
