I have been working at HD Supply full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, no weekends, normal 9-5. Pay is good, not great. Managers seem to always be fair and understanding. Field sales has a lot of freedom. Solid company, leader in the facilities maintenance industry.

    Cons

Moving up can be difficult, company was growing fast 3 years ago but after we went public everything hit a plateau. Company is nepotistic. Micromanaging is obnoxious. Cross department communication is poor

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Tightening your belt does not instill confidence in loyal employees who have been here for years

I worked at HD Supply as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The company encourages a work-life balanace. Employees are supportive instead of overly-competitive with coworkers. During my time there, I saw someone move departments or roles almost every week or two. Huge room for growth.

    Cons

Some of the upper level management struggle to move the company towards innovation. Moving from a catalog-based company to a company that finds success in online channels and new technologies is a struggle, but they are trying.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring in people who are innovative and entrepreneurial in their mindsets. Continue the internship program as it allowed opportunities to shape and teach the next generation of leaders.

    Pros

    Latest IT software, salary, location

    Cons

Company hypes itself too much. No room for advancement that is get stuck in a rut. Not able to use your talent. The management is very tight in accepting anything creative, that is there is a lot of political jungle.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please train your managers to 1. accept suggestions for improvement. 2. Train them in good management practices

    Pros

Good people to work with, willing to work with you. Company interested in good work-life balance

    Cons

Within a month of being hired they had a RIF and laid us off. Not enough time to really formulate much of an opinion but this was very hard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider alternatives to just letting people go, perhaps giving them an opportunity for other positions open in the company.

I have been working at HD Supply full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Pay is decent, co workers are okay overall , getting new equipment, okay health insurance. Opportunity to buy stock in company.

    Cons

Current management is only concerned about numbers not the staff. There has been a total purge of management ( good and bad managers were let go ). Management really doesn't have a clue about what goes on in the field. High rate of on the job injuries and management blames staff for getting hurt. All parts of the DC are under staffed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more attention to needs of the staff, especially why injuries are occurring. Stop worrying about why the numbers are low and pay more attention what is working and build on it. Add more staff and get them trained properly, not just thrown out there. Hire good and knowledgeable supervisors, not your friends.

    Pros

Great co-workers, fast paced work. There is room for advancement, promote from within mentality. Management is open to listening to new ideas.

    Cons

Benefits are good but could be better. Summer is the busy season so getting time off could be troublesome, you need to schedule it off at the beginning of the year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management needs to spend more time in the field to get a better understanding how the market is acting.

I worked at HD Supply full-time

    Pros

Fairly compensated. Good work/life balance. Family atmosphere once you are accepted by the old-timers. Good time-off policy with floating holidays, wellness day, and 10 days of PTO. A lot of growth and opportunities. Very stimulating projects and initiatives with plenty areas for improvement.

    Cons

Slight change in culture after the IPO. Health benefits went from "alright" to "bad". Multiple rounds of layoffs since IPO including executive members. Work/life balance on a down turn after lay-offs with a lot of the workload being dropped on "survivors". A lot of turnover, especially with contractors, resulting in delays of deliverables.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't lose sight of your core values. Go back to walking the talk. Choosing not to share any more than that cause it will fall on deaf ears.
