I have been working at HD Supply full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

San Diego is a beautiful area with plenty to do on the weekend. Pricey yet still very nice for Southern California.

    Cons

The place is plagued with EX GE stooges and Bain Capital flunkies who don't care about nothing but profit. Benefits suck, 401k sucks and the lack of clear direction hurts the organization. Lots of layers of people who don't do anything but manage pivot tables and PowerPoint slides. Company has potential once it sheds itself of incompetent management who can make a profit and care about its employees by providing decent compensation and bonus. This is "Not" a fun place to work! Don't be fooled by the volleyball nets out front. Layoffs are always happening here when profitability is not met. Don't believe anything you are told here. Run fast when the try to recruit you!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is no advice as the management do not care. You are just another "Cog" in the proverbial wheel. I read the reviews before coming and should have taken my other offers as this place truly sucks!

I have been working at HD Supply as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

As an Intern, most companies give you useless projects to do. At HDS I fel incredibly involved in every aspect of my department. The people are amazing and you really feel like you are a part of a big family. The company seems to truly care about their ideals and pushes every associate to succeed.

    Cons

Changes are incredibly slow to come about because of the high number of managers. There are, in my opinion, too many layers of management to allow for an effectively run machine.

By Far and Away WORST Company I Have EVER Worked For

I have been working at HD Supply full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

They provide lots of "toys", laptop, iPad, iPhone. Home office environment provides flexibility in your day.

Customers are generally good to work with and often realize the problem is HDS Management and not the FAR when things go wrong.

    Cons

Abysmal compensation. For the amount of time Management expects you to work (evening, weekends, etc) for the low salary and absent bonus system (due to the goals being outrageously inflated) , you'd be better off working an hourly job at say Starbucks. The benefits are expensive and cover very little.

Amount of time wasted on "reports", conference calls and so called training are unbelievable.

Definitely not a place for a family person as the company culture is to encourage "training" meetings, ride alongs and socialization that frequently is alone time with opposite sex employees and including alcohol and overnights. People who object to the inappropriate "team building" are often made to be outcasts and harassed.

Everyone is in CYA mode constantly. Fingerpointing and false accusations among line employees and management is the norm, and the accused employee has to prove their innocence via phone records, emails, etc. even against the most baseless charge.

The company is run with the efficiency of the US Postal Service! So many hands in the pot of every day decisions and activities that make clear cut direction and decisions impossible to make. Even the smallest logistical issue will result in days of endless emails with the world of alphabet soup titles cc'd with any resolution.

In a nutshell HDS is a horrible company. Look here only if you need a short term paycheck and keep looking!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clean house! Get rid of the incompetent management up and down the line.

I have been working at HD Supply full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

A lot of freedom. Often months pass without contact from direct manager. No management oversight allows for individual contribution and side activities, like job hunting and interviewing.

    Cons

Individual contributions make NO difference. Management actively seeks to beat down staff. Any complaint is taken as gospel, even when documented to be false. Unproductive employees are commonly kept and even promoted over productive employees. Poor compensation and terrible benefits. Vacation time is accumulated throughout the year, so no spring vacations. Silo management cultivates discord between departments. What little training is provided has little relevance. Business related expenses (like gas) are reimbursed pennies on the dollar.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit. Hire qualified leaders. Read a book.

I worked at HD Supply full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Not many, due to the fact that we were unable to see how good *as they say* the benefits were!

    Cons

That they hired a group of people for a position that after a month decided to "restructure" and let them all go. These people left other good jobs for the opportunity to "grow" within the company that they say promotes from within, when really they just put 13 people out of work after a month of working and trying hard.
Not good practice. They did not try and offer them another position somewhere in the company they waited until the middle of the day to let them go.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure you have a long term position available before you hire people, ask them to leave their current employment to work for you and then let them go after a month.

    Pros

Large company with good hours for a family person. Company has been growing which allows for promotions and ability to transfer around the country.

    Cons

This company was known for great benefits in the past but now under the new owners most benefits like 401K, stock purchase plan and stock options have been stripped away and replaced with reduced benefits. 401K was a 6% match on your first 5% now it is 1.25% on your first 5% and if they hit their numbers as a company you get 1.25% additional and .5% if they hit their extended numbers. So if we do really good we get 3% match compared to 6% before. Stock purchase program was a 15% discount from the lower of the beginning or ending price now it is 5% discount from the ending price (not a good deal). Stock option program was for all of the sales team based on your performance now the stock option program is for only the very high level management. During this time we have experienced record sales growth and many of the top executives have made millions while the ones who built facilities maintenance have taken a hit financially.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice
