I have been working at HDR full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Great employee owned culture. People are smart respectful and friendly. You won't see micromanagers here. Managers let you work without getting in the way. Interesting projects to work on. Collaboration and team work is a big part of the company's culture. Very transparent and ethical company that emphasizes quality work. Very good salaries and benefits. Impressive company stock performance.

    Cons

No sick days. HDR has very few cons I can think of, having worked for several private companies and with the government I can really say that the pros out shadow the cons.Being a technical company, managers tend to be more technical than project manager.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue improving the current QA/QC procedures and organize a bit better the file structure in Project Wise

The employees were friendly and willing to share knowledge about their job responsibilities and experience with the company. Interaction with management in a comfortable environment. Participated in community outreach activities exposing STEM to youths. Attended Mariner baseball games on multiple occasions.

    Cons

From my experience there are none. Compensated and accommodated well. Love the values! Leadership was awesome!

I have been working at HDR full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great experience, and able to "dive right in" with projects and take charge. HDR is 80% organized in terms of their benefits, 401k, etc. Currently they are growing at an insane speed and therefore might not be hiring the "best of the best."

    Cons

Management needs to get organized...too many double standards and 0 organization. Also, the company should really in force company policies (i.e.- office dating/dating your supervisor).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure to backfill positions...if someone is moved around / leaves position make sure there is someone there to take over for them.

Current Employee - Project Engineer in Charlotte, NC

I have been working at HDR full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great people to work with. Expert engineers are always available throughout the company and great network in place to reach out to anyone.
Matrix organization is followed, so you can make career moves in different directions.
Work is most of the time challenging, once you gain the trust of senior engineers, you can start running your own little projects but they are always there to review, check and help you if you need.

    Cons

Depending on the office size and client base, career development can be a struggle. If there are too many project managers and not enough junior level engineers doing the work, you can stay in the same position for a while.
No clear advancement structure. The "you can be anything you want to be" attitude can stall your advancement if you do not know what you want out of your career and you do not have a close relationship with a senior level person to help you understand and guide. You really need to speak up, otherwise I have seen many quit because they can not advance - especially when there is no strong leadership in the group.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Diversity is needed in this company, especially among higher levels of managers - and I do not mean gender alone.
Provide more mentoring and guidance to the junior level staff. There might not be a clear advancement structure (i.e., Engineer - I, Engineer - II and so on), but help the young staff to visualize what their future career looks like at the company.

    Former Employee - Project Manager

    I worked at HDR full-time

    Pros

Salary on par with industry, lots of different projects to work on, descent benefits, employee owned, stock price has done well, lots of internal training.

    Cons

Large company problems...focus on growth and bottom line draws management further from actual work. Tend to promote staff too soon with not enough project experience...occasionally with less experience than the group they are supervising. Not all project managers know how to manage staff. Staff development varies depending on who you work under.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more attention to who you promote...not all are ready.
