It is difficult to maintain a work /life balance and the company offers little to no recognition for one’s hard work.

I have been working at HGST full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great people and oganizational values. Benefits are average however they do provide a wonderful crossfit program for free.

    Cons

Growth within the organization is difficult. An individual will be given a lot of responsibility however little to no recognition for the positive outcome. An employee has to have a true desire for self-motivation because the management team will continually burden the strong employees and offer little to no recognition for the hard work. Without self-motivation it may be difficult to feel appreciated and to continue to perform at ones peak.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide positive feedback in addition to criticisms on a regular basis. Recognize individuals among their peers often and know that these little gestures of appreciation are often more valuable than any other behind the scenes award.

    2. #1 in enterprise storage - only one other real competitor
    3. Good compensation package

    Cons

I worked at HGST as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Great people overall to work with, very smart. Variety of work is interesting. Definite work-life balance.

    Cons

Staffing in some groups are done quickly without consideration for actually staffing the best people for the job. The group interaction because of this is strained and there is high turnover. Also, there seems to be an unprofessional interaction between employees who have been with the company for a number of years to new employees, making it difficult to fit in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Instill a one-team mentality where employees interact positively and respect each other.

I have been working at HGST as an intern for more than a year

    Pros

    - Competitive pay rate but could be better
    - Great work life balance. Understanding managers and flexible with hours
    - Some pretty solid benefits. Crossfit, premium coffee, cell phone discounts

    Cons

    - Always seems to behind the rest of the industry. Slow to come out with new products
    - Constantly shuffling people around, which creates confusion. I had 3 different managers in 6 months at one point
    - Communication gap between US and overseas teams are prevalent in some areas.
    - Seems to be hard to get promoted

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Double check that organizational decisions make sense rather than just making a move for the sake of making one.
