I have been working at HGST full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Strong emphasis on teamwork, great people, lots of opportunity to make a difference. I don't see much political maneuvering (although it happens everywhere).

    Cons

Concerns about the pending integration with Western Digital makes it hard to hire, so it can take a long time to fill positions.

    Pros

Genuine and mostly succesfull effort to modernise their infrastructure and internal processes. Mature and competent egineering talent. Excellent benefits. Working hard on diversifying their market beyond hard drives. Good working environment.

    Cons

Part of a public company so there is friction on getting projects approved and out the door. Fairly narrow product scope so you're mostly refining features for each new generation. Conservative client base so limited room for radical innovation. Facing a market transition from HD to SSD and trying to enter new markets so there's some uncertainty about business direction. Merger with WD will happen in the indefiinte future.

    Advice to Management

Engineering talent compensation needs a review, it's falling behind. Simplyfy the product lines, particularly in the consumer space.

    Pros

some co-workers are really nice to work with, especially in the Asian countries. They promote more teamwork attitudes than the US workers.

    Cons

The HR Department is ran by incompetent, unprofessional, favoritism folks. Alot of talk with no action and it is just the same BS over an over. WD HR needs to clean house when they take over!!! We are looking forward to that day... Low base salary and the benefits are horrible. No real career development available for anyone looking to improve their careers. Find another company to be successful.

    Advice to Management

Actually manage performance and pay accordingly. Open your eyes to the why HR is mismanaged. Alot of us outside HR have no respect for that function!

    Pros

Excitement builds for integration with WD, we are hoping good things will happen.

    Cons

Tolerance for incompetence is key! Career development and employee benefits suck! The department in HR is led but unprofessional talent as leaders. The head of the HR Organization is out of touch with employees and cares for the Executive staff only. They need new and talented leaders. The engineering teams have no respect for them. Plenty of better companies to work for in the Tech industry in this valley, you won't find long term growth or excitement here.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the employees for a change! All the good people have left...

Great Place. Very friendly environment. Knowledgeable staff.

Once a contractor, always a contractor. No overtime if a contractor. Some management do not have any civilized manners. When the lay you off, they notify you last minute.

    Advice to Management

Be upfront with your employees especially when their temps.

    Pros

The engineering problems can be challenging and the work is usually interesting.

    Cons

Working with international teams can force meetings to be at very inconvenient times. There are a large number of meetings that have little value.

    Advice to Management

Minimize the number of management layers.
