Honda has a solid reputation. HMA on the other hand...

I have been working at HMA (Honda Manufacturing of Alabama) full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    - Infinite job security (exempt employees)
    - Excellent benefits
    - Pension program (for those that have grandfathered into it)
    - Great 401k match (for 2014 and beyond)
    - Flex time (for exempt employees)
    - Up to 20 vacation days (on top of two weeks for plant shut downs and national holidays)
    - Strong name to have on your resume
    - Paid overtime (for Level 2 and below)
    - Reasonable bonus

    Cons

    - Not really challenging... just really busy
    - Low pay and minimal increases each year
    - Talks a lot about Honda Philosophy but actually looks down on those who actually try to put it into practice
    - Paperwork, Paperwork, Paperwork, Paperwork, Paperwork, Paperwork, Paperwork, Paperwork...
    - The longer you stay here, the less marketable you feel for other careers
    - Not really serious about quality, just meeting production schedules
    - Pushes the line associates too hard (how many 5x10's weeks have they worked in a row?)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Many others have already said what needs to be said. Take some time to actually read these comments and maybe you won't have this continued attrition. Unfortunately, we exempt associates have been told many times that we are only "support" and are not "value added" and it shows in the way you treat us. Our job is to make cars and nothing more, right? If you want our plant to continue to be ranked the lowest among Honda plants, keep doing what you are doing and pay no attention to what we are writing here.

    Pros

Opportunities for growth and development. Recognition for job well done.

    Cons

Sometimes training of new associates was very quick and had to hit the high points and GO.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A little more time for new associates to develop to assembly line processes and expectations.

I worked at HMA (Honda Manufacturing of Alabama) full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

I worked for HMA for 10 years. I was given a lot of opportunity to do and learn a lot of different things. Lots of responsibility, hard work, and I really enjoyed the accountability the company expects from its associates.

    Cons

The company considers the learning environment part of your compensation. A method of keeping salaries low. Dept, Division and Senior Managers are very political and pick their favorites that are permitted to progress.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Lose the politics and favorites.

I worked at HMA (Honda Manufacturing of Alabama) full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Honda has a lot of respect in the business community and having Honda on your resume is a huge plus.

HMA in particular is a great place to learn about process improvement, root cause analysis, process discipline, project management and manufacturing. However, don't stay so long that you are trapped by the promise of the pension. Learn, leverage the Honda name and move on to a company with more opportunities and higher pay.

    Cons

Extremely limited advancement and growth opportunities

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus more on leadership and less on management. I realize this is actually a difficult challenge for such a task oriented environment but if you want to build trust with associates and improve morale... improve leadership.

    Pros

Good Benefits and most of the employees are good to work with.

    Cons

Pay could be a lot better!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay employees enough so they will not leave after getting experience and the Honda brand added to their resumes'.

I worked at HMA (Honda Manufacturing of Alabama) full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    1. The pay is, okay - not fantastic, but you'll survive.
    2. There are some great people.

    Cons

    1. Associates with more seniority get away with torturing those with less.
    2. People quickly become jealous of your abilities and try to get rid of you or make you seem incompetent.
    3. Degrees are overlooked. Everything is based upon seniority.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider those who have worked hard for degrees when it is time for a promotion.

I have been working at HMA (Honda Manufacturing of Alabama)

    Pros

Benefits are very good, salaries are okay. Not much mentoring, but training is available. Average performers have limited opportunities for new assignments.

    Cons

Honda believes in crossing the T's and dotting the I's. Good processes with checks and balances are part of manufacturing and administrative activities. If you want flexibility, Honda is probably not the place for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Honda believes in associate involvement, but relatively few actively strive to implement improvements. The Honda Philosophy is well reasoned but most associates don't understand it well. Management needs to find a way to engage associates on an emotional level.
