I worked at HMSHost full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Free meals, good hours, and meet great people from all over the world

    Cons

Very unorganized, I have worked there for a year and seen allot of people come and go. Management is placed around without any idea what to do. They only care about keeping cost low, nothing els. Front of house management is tasked to run back of house with no experience, and in result, crashes the line.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get a real chef

Lunch breaks with a voucher every day you work.
Are a little lenient towards calling out, but need to be careful with them.

    Cons

    Have to pay for parking.
    Management isn't up to par.

    Pros

Good money. Working for travelling passengers can be fun. Unionized.

    Cons

You will never gain significant seniority unless you plan to stay for 10 years. Very unprofessional approach to customer service. Hours can be tough...3 a.m starts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider those older staff that pass on their bad habits to newbies.

    Pros

Flexible hours, position availability. Shift differentials.

    Cons

Training program is terrible. Use an antiquated and non user friendly cashier software program.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow mechanism for front line staff to provide feedback. Show an interest in employee concerns as it relates to how the company could provide better service.

I worked at HMSHost full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I really did love working for HMS Host! I started at an entry minimum wage level at that time $6.75 and by the time I left 3 years later I had moved up 2 ranks and was making $8.25. The fast paced environment is not for everyone but I really enjoyed staying busy and feeling like I was really accomplishing something.

    Cons

Although they do internally promote sometimes, it's not near as much as I would like to see. High turn over rate means wages are still fairly low

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make your company stand out by offering more than minimum wage!

Former Employee - Barista - Starbucks in Mantua, OH

    I worked at HMSHost

    Pros

You will meet customers from all over the world and can sometimes learn interesting and wonderful things about their culture. You can learn a lot about coffee and up selling in this fast paced environment. If you can handle being a Barista, you can take on any customer service position!

    Cons

More than half the staff can't afford to make ends meat, the jobs offered by Host pay very little (minimum wage) for the positions they expect you to fill. A good example: when I was hired on I was paid min. wage and only offered a .50 cent raise when being promoted to Assistant Supervisor. It wasn't worth the hassle, especially when I discovered those who were hired after me were making .50 cents more.
The benefits package is so poorly executed that it isn't worth investing in, you will never get what you pay for! Also, the knowledge you acquire at this job is somewhat useless, as you will most likely not use it elsewhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is very hard to have a great work-life balance due to the extremely high demands of all your positions, it might be something to improve on in the future.
