I worked at HMT Associates full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I wish there were positives with this employer, however I can't find any. The time I'd spent there was very hard professionally.

    Cons

    Long unstructured hours.
    Untrained upper management.
    Heavy employee turn over.
Management has no experience in this business.
This company is ran by a former McDonalds manager and it shows.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend less time wondering what your employees think of you, and focus on structure and time management.

    Career Suicide

Former Employee - Creative in Seven Hills, OH

    I worked at HMT Associates

    Pros

There really is none that come to mind besides free coffee, a decent office chair and an occasional free lunch.

    Cons

    - Salary well below national averages.

    - Little or no career advancement opportunity or promotions from within.

    - They want you to be a robotic entity within their framework an will not be receptive to any ideas or suggestions even insights from a person that worked for a direct competitor of theirs.

    - Micro managed at every level.

    - Creative critique comes from every person not involved and not trained in the creative process.

    - Countless revisions in "guessing of what the client wants" instead of guiding them and selling the idea.

    - You hire people to be creative, let them do what they are hired to do without the constant questioning of their decisions.

    - Too much upper level management that are clueless of how to run an agency.

    - Basically have 1 client... that's it. That client pulls the plug after their yearly review... Bye bye HMT.

    - Will never retain any quality senior level talent on the creative side once they discover what a joke the place is as an agency.

    - Ridiculous timelines given to creative team to produce work. No time to think about a possible creative solution and god forbid actually brain storm an idea to come up with a killer creative idea. Basically get a job order and react to it as quickly as you can to produce mediocre work at best.

    - Plan on hiring an attorney if you want to display any pieces of work that you may find decent enough for a portfolio piece as you will get a cease and desist letter.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let the creative team create, trust their ability and knowledge and teach your account people to actually sell an idea instead of being glorified, robotic, order taking waitresses to your client/ Teach them how to guide a client and sell good creative ideas.

Former Employee - Promotions Coordinator in Broadview Heights, OH
Former Employee - Promotions Coordinator in Broadview Heights, OH

    I worked at HMT Associates

    Pros

Not too many. I had an office where I could close my door.

    Cons

Senior Management has no clue on how to run an agency.
Does not listent to people who have years of experience on how to help run an agency.
    No sick days
No care in the world about work/life balance
Treats employees like the work in a sweat shop
    No respect for their employees
Micro- Managment is the worst there ever was. You had to turn in a to do list everyday for approvals.
Cannot talk to clients for almost 6 months before you go through HMT's "training" which is laughable.
At an offsite meeting they asked for questions to be written down and turned in at the end of the meeting and then the questions would be addressed after the management has had time to think about the answers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When you hire people trust them to get the job done.
    Implement a better benefits package.
Get rid of some senior management- too top heavy.
Management needs to learn how to run an agency...not a McDonalds.
Good luck staying in business down the road!

    I worked at HMT Associates

    Pros

    - salary is good
    - benefits decent

    Cons

    - 1/2 hr lunch in a 9 hour day
    - no sick days
    - if you are out, you have to "pay it back" either with hours or $$
    - written approvals needed for doctor appts.
    - management is clueless about how to run an agency
    - micro-managing at every level
    - employees allowed to work out of state but locals not allowed to work from home
    - all industry standards don't apply here
    - "but that's how we've always done it" is king
    - To Do List required daily of all acct. staff--and then approval of that list
    - too many internal changes before client actually sees creative
    - wouldn't recommend to my worst enemy

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

like someone else said, pay better attention to your money-makers. allow the talent you hired to apply that talent and experience--stop micro-managing.

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

    I worked at HMT Associates

    Pros

    Great client base
    Run like a production house
Efficient management (down to the second)
    Excellent execution

    Cons

Is managed like a McDonald's or a Walmart (retail not corporate)
Not run like a marketing agency
NO creative ability or room for creative thinking
Sr. Management has ZERO experience in industry and is not open to outside thinking in any way
    NO strategic thinking or ability

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire people with experience and then keep them
Think about the reason people with experience leave ON THEIR OWN
Remove current Sr. Management from creative process COMPLETELY
Current Sr. Management should run production business ONLY
    Be open to outside thinking
Learn how Marketing agencies run...not like McDonalds
    Give your employees sick days
    Give your employees better benefits
Anyone who has been with the company for over 1 year should attend a class on how to work with others
