    It's a paycheck

    Technology Specialist (Current Employee)
    Kansas City, MO

ProsThe salaries and benefits HNTB offers to employees are hard to find in this industry. If you're looking to simply support your family, put food on the table and provide them healthcare...HNTB might be a good fit.

ConsLeadership and organization of the company as a whole is terrible. It's like working for the Government...lots of departments with overlapping responsibilities, each with their own political walls in place, and no clear direction or desire to work together on common goals. Leadership is totally disconnected from the reality of those actually providing services to their clients, which makes "change for the better" extremely slow and hard to accomplish in this company. If you're looking to change the engineering industry for the better, it's best to find a job elsewhere as you will be deeply disappointed with your experience at HNTB

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to the people producing the services you're profiting from. A "bottom up" sharing of suggestions holds far greater value than your "top down" corporate message sharing when it comes to how a company can improve efficiencies, profits, and added services. There's more to running a company than what you see in your spreadsheets today. When you look past the numbers, there are great people with great talent, willing to do great things for great leaders. Take a moment to recall how you elevated yourselves to the positions you're in today, and reach down from the heavens to pull others up in the company that deserve it. Good leaders should mentor and grow new leaders.

    RUN

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Kansas City, MO

    ProsPeople you work with, benefits

ConsUpper management is clueless, too many engineer running the company and not enough business people, no accountability for middle to upper managers, my manager was never around didn't no what I did, it's like working for a comany from the 1950's.

Advice to Senior ManagementImplement a mandatory retirement age for executives. Change is good especially with the CEO currently in place.

Great company to start your career journey

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsWell established, well respected in the business, competent and friendly employees, good compensations, the company adopts innovations in design and project management, you can skip stairs easily if you show your talent.

ConsBad strategic planning and risk managements, opened multiple offices in some states then struggled and quickly closed them which resulted in lots of layoffs, hard to climb up the ladder.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe suites are living in a different world focusing on growing the business only not the employees.

Good projects, not so great upper management.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Arlington, VA

ProsThe projects are some of the best projects to work on and are very interesting. Even professional employees can get straight-time over-time for any hours over 40 hours if approved by manager.

ConsNo mentor-ship program, no program to help employees grow, benefits are not good. I was asked to work on projects with tight or non-existent budgets and asked not to bill (ie work on my own time) and since it was not billed, that time is not recognized by management.

This place is the Hindenburg, they just don't know it yet.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Kansas City, MO

ProsGreat place to gain experience, if you're already very experienced they will bring you in as an AVP or above, those people have amazing incentives.

ConsNo career path, people will not correct issues, ineffective management, not willing to pay for experience.

Managers just keeps their heads down so they can collect a paycheck and not be bothered. Trying to change the status quo here is the kiss of death.

    Ever seen Mad Men? Yeah.....

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit reorganizing the company every 8-12 months (this happened for 4 years in a row). Fire people that are ineffective, I think the only place where it is harder to be let go would be a government position.

A great company to work with

    Senior Engineer (Current Employee)

ProsColleagues are open-minded, collaborative, sharing work. The company actively provide tailored training to help professional career growth. The company has developed mature culture and standards of performance that greatly help the efficiency and help employees identify the responsibilities.

ConsThe lay-offs can be scary: some day when you come to work, your next cubicle coworker could have disappeared because of layoff. The laid off only have two hours to get personal stuff, without any advanced notice.

    Evil Lurks at HNTB

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGreat employees who are devoted and very competent. Trying to implement innovative technology in design.

ConsCold, detached management (executive level). Lack of concern for employee development. High dollar salaries paid to executives while rank and file positions are cut. Lavish executive retreats to extravagant destinations while the employees were expected to cut back. Cold, uncaring H.R. leadership team.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet a new captain for the ship and clean house in the excutive leader line up. Start fresh. Stop holding lower level managers at fault for the bad business decisions made by the excutives.

    ruined a once great company

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Kansas City, MO

Prosbeen around for about 100 years

ConsMost middle-managers have no clue and very little if any people skills. Many employees overworked and very underappreciated.

Advice to Senior Managementvery sad you sent so many jobs to India because of your greediness
