I worked at HNTB Companies full-time

    Pros

When I did work there, it was feast or famine. Pay was decent. There is cake every month for birthdays.

    Cons

Hierarchy culture. If you're a lower status it was known. Management allows poor behavior towards others.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the bad apples.

I worked at HNTB Companies full-time

    Pros

Pay can be solid, if you can negotiate/deliver results well.

    Cons

Senior Management's commitment to ethical accountability.

    Advice to Management

Honestly investigating ethical lapses should be a higher priority.

I have been working at HNTB Companies full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Well know in the industry because they've been around for awhile.

    Cons

The company is known for big projects but you'll never work on them because they don't have a development program. Same old project managers work on all the projects and don't trust others and are allowed to do whatever they want. Arrogance and elitist behavior is rampant. Blaming environment.

    Advice to Management

Hold PM's accountable and actually learn how to conduct evaluations of performance.

    Pros

Great people work there, there are a lot of lifers, but could be more if they were treated better.

    Cons

Mismanaged from top down which makes working environment very tense and unenjoyable. They don't appreciate their people and do very little in terms of training. They are a very old company with archaic ways of managing. I would run from this company.

    Advice to Management

Get new managers from top to bottom.

    Pros

Medical benefits are better than most KC companies

    Cons

Leadership is no longer current - old approaches no longer work, such as memos to communicate updates Sexist approach to leading - few, if any, female leaders in EVP and above - no board membership of any diversity (race or gender)

    Advice to Management

Change your leadership at the top and welcome diversity to your ranks

I worked at HNTB Companies full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Compared to many other firms in NY, the starting salary was high, and they give "merit" increases annually. Also, because they can't retain any mid-level staff, entry level get a lot of challenging work from the start.

    Cons

Too many senior level people with no real room for growth and development of the younger staff. In a lot of ways it seems to be an office people come to make high salary before retiring. The senior level management are all rail engineers, so every other department gets slighted in project pursues. And they are horrific with promotions. You continue to develop yourself and your responsibilities and you get no merit for it. People wait 3-7 years for a promotion that is suppose to be every two. Part of this is they are currently obsessed with becoming the largest office in the firm, so they care about hiring more then development and growth.

    Advice to Management

Focus on developing the staff you have, rather then worry about hiring as many people as possible. Diversity the work load, and stop only caring about the rail department. Understand you are losing staff for a reason and adjust.

IT is the least cutting edge organization in the company

    • Senior Management

I have been working at HNTB Companies full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Smart, talented, people; Company over all has a great culture; money to invest in employees, at the core the company has great values.

    Cons

The companies core values are so lacking within IT. There is a culture lacking empowerment, and trust which is breeding a micromanagement culture. IT would rather invest in a vendor than in their people. There is a chaotic, unbalanced feel to the organization that comes largely from an IT management group that is for the most part, unskilled at what they are doing. They have an unhealthy need to manage by group think than make a decision. If by happenstance they make a decision and anything is off course they are quick to play the blame game. The blame effect is so strong that it has become paralytic and sustains that negative feedback loop of group decision making.

    Advice to Management

HNTB IT could be one of the premier IT organizations in Kansas City if they would find trusting, forward thinking leaders who were smart enough to recognize and utilize the smart, talented, extremely capable people that they have working for them.

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

Decent pay and benefits, time off and paid holidays, although difficult to get approval to take time off.

    Cons

Revolving door of managers, nobody seems to know what anyone else does. Complaints about toxic work environments went from new manager to new manager with no resolution. HNTB does not fight for their consultants either when a client makes a wrongful accusation. I had to go to the news as a whistleblower for what was happening at the client site, as HNTB had no desire to fix the situation.

    Advice to Management

Hire competent people who will stay in the position for more than a few months.

    Pros

Base salary is on the low mean rate for the office I work at.

    Cons

Health Insurence, career path, good old boys club, lack of minorities, few women, bad attitudes, no bonus program, 401(k) matchs 6cents of the dollar contributed up to $1,500 max.

    Advice to Management

Fire all upper level management, go public trading, try to have some transparency

    Pros

Convenient locations. Health insurance premium is low.

    Cons

Company only cares about own growth. They pay low salary to lower level employee to win the jobs. But PM's & bosses got higher salaries. Some community get benefits like Chinese, Italian.
