I have been working at HOK full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The people i get to work with every day are some of the best people i have ever worked with. They are unbelievably talented and genuinely interested in seeing the people around them succeed as well as do a great job. Their creativity and dedication to a quality project is remarkable. HOK as a company is committed to doing the right thing and while everything may not always be "perfect" I know that the Management does their best to do the best. They are open and honest about how the company is doing and transparent about the results and changes, even if it's not-so-good news.

    Cons

There is a lot of work and sometimes we are spread too thin.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

    Challenging projects and advancement potential.

    Cons

Life / Work Balance Understanding and Assistance needed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not promote someone to Vice President anouncing publically his great performance, adding utilization manager of all PM workplans and staffing to his Health Care project responsibilities just to then lay him off a year later. Especially after it was just anounced publicly a few months prior to the lay off. Perception to his professional career was devastating and it continues.

Current Employee - Architect in San Francisco, CA

I have been working at HOK full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good people, lots of available resources including software and technology. Varied choice of health and other benefits. Hard work is recoginzed with lip service, if not with good compensation. Outspoken employees can be heard--it's better to make your wishes known (they can only say no). Active and eager volunteerism is encouraged if not always rewarded.

    Cons

Hard work is expected. We consistently work 50+ hours every week--HOK makes a tidy profit on its salaried workers this way. Some projects are poorly managed and suffer from a lack of attention by someone who can steward it well. Staffing is often haphazard and based on need rather than appropriate skills. Interesting projects with a focus on sustainability. Health benefits while comprehensive, are not cheap.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Implement the 9-80 work week to improve morale and avoid burnout--or include more flexibility. Pay better salaries commensurate with the long hours. Staff projects according to need and skills offered--maintain a better understanding of what team members' strengths and weaknesses are.
