    Pros

HOK is a structured company. There are lots of growth opportunities internally. Also, with more than 20 offices there are opportunities for employees to move with HOK.

    Cons

Since HOK is a large corporation you will work with people who you may never get to meet face to face.

    Advice to Management

Some advice would be to continue to promote from within when people deserve it. Look for ways to cut some of the red-tape.

    Pros

Nice people, good work-life balance, decent benefits.

    Cons

Design is mediocre, leadership is sometimes missing, the system can be very bureaucratic and not as standardized as you'd think for a large corporation.

    Pros

Highly collaborative workplace. People who enjoy multi-diciplinary design environment will thrive! San Francisco studio is particularly strong. HOK's president is a designer and this sends a strong message and committment to design internally and externally.

    Cons

Regionally-focused design studios are great for site and region specific design, but make it a challenge to create an overarching design process, aesthetic or voice. Leadership board needs more designers.

    Advice to Management

Invest more time, energy and resource in the mentorship of junior and intermediate designers. Promotion from withing sends a very positive and healthy signal to the firm and marketplace. Leverage the global design studio to expand in to emerging markets of S. America and Africa.

    Pros

An employee centric architectural firm that is fair, accommodating and strives for satisfied clients and superior design and technical execution. Community and collaboration is emphasized.

    Cons

The New York office still looks to find its place in the NYC development community, very interior centric, higher profile projects in local area remain elusive.

    Pros

Most of my colleagues were friendly and talented...though their talents went unrecognized, underutilized and unappreciated

    Cons

    Oh where do I start...
    - Low morale. A lot of layoffs in the last few months due to management being unable to win projects. Meanwhile LA construction is booming...
    - Management are closed minded and disconnected from staff
    - Do not expect automatic salary increases every year. You have to speak up. They'll avoid the issue otherwise.
    - Very 'old school' design mentality. I'm sure their ideas were lovely in the 90s...
    - Restricted types of sector. The LA office is mostly justice and healthcare.
    - Beware the office psycopath...you'll meet her soon enough

    Advice to Management

Management needs to be wiped and new faces brought in. The LA office barely registers a blip in the city's architectural scene. This is the WORST management I have ever worked with.
