    Innovative research environment

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Malibu, CA

ProsCompany interested in innovative ideas and provides employees many responsibilities. Good group of smart people across very diverse research areas. Ideal location overlooking ocean.

ConsSupport for various technical areas tends to be pretty cyclical. Educationally it is very top heavy, which is good for research, but can make system implementation more difficult.

    Great place for research

Development Engineer (Current Employee) Malibu, CA

ProsHRL is a great place for doing research, it allows you to be creative. Also, no other lab can beat the scenic location of HRL. The people are great and very helpful.

ConsThere isn't too much interest in actually commercializing technology generated in the labs. The labs are very outdated.

Advice to Senior ManagementUpdate labs for safer environment. Focus on projects that could potentially become products.

Old aerospace company run like it was still 1965

    SUBCONTRACTS (Former Employee) Malibu, CA

ProsGood location if you like isolation and good pay for this facility

ConsHorrible management with no clue what is going on in the administration. All focus is only on researchers. The facilities are a joke. No improvements of any kind since 1960 . . . where is the cash going?

Advice to Senior ManagementSpend the funds on facilities upgrade

    Definitely a Research Lab

Development Engineer (Current Employee) Malibu, CA

ProsWork is very project based, which allows for great diversity of responsibilities. Plenty of smart and capable people to collaborate with, if you look for them. On site food is amazing, and well priced. Location is picturesque.

ConsTechnical infrastructure is poor. Most IT solutions beyond Install Windows and add Software License X must be handled yourself (some people will appreciate this freedom though). People can be dogmatic, leading to duplicated, incompatible solutions in several cases. It seems like things are getting better, but only slowly.

You cannot afford a commute less than 30 min long; invest in a good driving car.

    Excellent place to work

Development Engineer (Current Employee) Malibu, CA

ProsFantastic location, relaxing environment (just choose carefully where you live and plan for the corresponding drive), working alongside some brilliant minds.

ConsRoutine midyear and year-end deadlines create a crunch-time period, but I suppose it's not all that bad.

Great Legacy does not guarantee a great future

Research Staff Member (Former Employee) Malibu, CA

ProsHRL is a good place to start his or her career in research. HRL is one of the few commercial labs left in the US where one can conduct both industry and govt, sponsored research. Great legacy in aerospace research, satellite communication and photonics.

ConsHRL has been primarily a aerospace research laboratory. However they are trying to be a defense CRAD facility. Hence HRL is all over the place offering breadth but not breadth as pointed out by other reviewers.

Advice to Senior ManagementWith dismal govt. funding for aerospace and defense R&D not much is possible in the short-term.

OK but not for long term

Research Staff Member (Former Employee) Malibu, CA

ProsNice location overlooking the ocean. Get to do some fun research.

ConsMainly defense and government related research - got to secure contracts before you get paid.. ha.. and you got to clock in your time card with multiple projects are you doing. Departments don't usually interact. Workers sometimes share one office together. Promotion is slow. Work can be hectic, including sometimes weekend work. Bonus is small. Perks - few.

An excellent place to do advanced industrial research.

Development Engineer (Former Employee) Malibu, CA

ProsLocation - Malibu is an amazing place to work.
Colleagues - a very well educated and professional staff
Projects - the research performed here is on the cutting edge
Small company - easy to find people when you need to get things done

ConsCan be difficult at the entry-level, as average experience level of staff is very high
Small company means fewer 'extras' and a less diverse crowd of coworkers

Advice to Senior ManagementEncourage interaction, especially among younger/newer hires, across lab and project lines. This will make it easier for them to collaborate later in their career when they find themselves on the same projects or requiring one another's help.

    Beautiful place, low efficiency

    Scientist (Current Employee) Malibu, CA

ProsBeautiful working area, people are nice. Not too much pressure. Every engineer is working on more than one project at the same time.

Consfunding is very important. Sometime, if funding is short, you won't get paid. Lots of lazy guys. They never work except talking. Lots of meetings every day. most meeting just waste of time

    Great place for research

Research Staff Physicist (Current Employee) Malibu, CA

    ProsBeautiful location
    Very intelligent staff
    Interesting research problems

ConsHRL is still finding its personality
    Commute inevitable

Advice to Senior ManagementAdd personality: e.g. staff web pages, less generic public presence.
