I have been working at HSB Group as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

    Good pay, nice environment, flexible.

    Cons

Inconsistency in management style. Needs top-down approach to consistently pull management towards encouraging employees to give their all.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

New managers should go through corporate-cultural training to help them fit into an already-great environment.

I worked at HSB Group full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The company advances and demotes an individual quickly. Partly because they are quick to make decisions without looking at the whole picture.

    Cons

company culture is not the best. Very click-ish and more about who you know rather than what you know. A lot of people are overlooked because of this.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

invest more in your employees and then sit back and watch them soar. They are some amazing people there who would/could do some amazing things. It really comes down to who you know. Not the way a couple should be run.

    Pros

Well established copmany, world wide corporate presents.

    Cons

Micro managent of employees through corporate developed software programs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat employees as people, not field operations robots that have to deal with very difficult operating systems.

    I worked at HSB Group

    Pros

HSB Group was a good place to work. It was a bit disorganized at times, but it was mainly due to trying new techniques. They had some great people who worked there.

    Cons

There was little room for promotion and there were people who came to work everyday where no one knew what exactly they did. The company needs to be more forward looking. Although they do not cater to personal consumers, an up dated website would do wonders regardless...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer more opportunities to learn the business and solicit suggestions from employees who may be more engaged in upcoming technologies.

I worked at HSB Group full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

I am struggling to think of any good things about working at the company. One thing I can say is that there is no pressure on people to perform whatsoever and the hours are purely 9-5 with no overtime or extra effort required. This may be a pro for people, e.g.: working parents or those who don't want to progress. For me, it was not good as it meant the general attitude in the office was one of a company in terminal decline with employees who did not care.

    Cons

    1. Lack of any paths of progression within the company
HSB was full of employees who had been there for years without moving forward. The Senior Management did not provide training or opportunities to widen their skillset, or encourage people to take exams and there was no structured progression

    2. Pay / Benefits
Out of kilter with the rest of the London insurance market

    3. Staff
Many staff who did not care about their job / the company and gave across a bad impression of the company when they met people from other companies in the industry

    4. Bad relationships with London market brokers
HSB talks a good talk but does not back it up with substance / action. As such, many brokers feel they lie and do not like to work with them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in yoru staff and trus them to do their jobs - offer them training and support. A number of the current staff should be moved to the Manchester office as they are not London market standard.
