  1. HSBC is THE best global company to work for hands down!

    Pros

HSBC has many reasons why it's one of the best places to work: strong brand committment, strong ethical values, respectful to the environment, investing in the employees, and good communicaiton, good benefits, and meritocratic performance management. Some of the brightest people in the corporate global population are here at HSBC. The culture is in some ways like other financial institutions but different in that a senior management truly cares about the engagement of the employees - are they happy, would they recommend HSBC, would they stay at HSBC. Environmentally, I feel like they are leading the charge. A new headquarters in Illinois is a prime example - from cisterns on roof to collect rainwater for toilets to a cafeteria that is green to energy and paper saving strategies. The green effect cascades to the consumer as well with less direct mail compared to other companies.

    Cons

It's a global company and you feel the size when planning initiatives that span regions or continents. An example of this feeling is sheer paperwork and meetings. It's a facet that most people in regionalized or local companies don't feel. It's not necessarily a bad thing but part of doing business.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing the things that you have been doing: strong brand committment, strong ethical values, respectful to the environment, investing in your employees, and communicate with the same frequency and message density.

    Pros

Great pay and benefits. Salary plus unlimited commission. Challenging and fast paced environment. Great work life balance if managed properly.

    Cons

Challenging and fast paced environment. Never ending pile of work. If not managed properly, can take over your life. Tough business to be in right now.

    Advice to Management

Should not have reduced lending to the extent where almost no loans we being booked. Needed to tough it out and keep the doors open.

    Pros

HSBC is committed to work life balance, actively promoting work-from-home opportunities, encouraging employees to take care of personal issues whenever necessary and allowing time-off and ad-hoc working environments to accommodate all situations. The benefits are excellent, with HSBC paying a very high proportion of medical and dental and matching 401k contributions at a level higher than most.

    Cons

Pay is not what it is at Investment Banks. Facilities are less than top-notch. The lower level worker talent is not at the level one might expect at a large bank.

    Advice to Management

Upgrade your facilities in New York.

    Pros

Work - Life Balance is something they strive for. Core Leave - 2 continuous weeks of vacation are required. Salary & Benefits - Better than most banks.

    Cons

Collaboration - Not as robust as you would expect for such a leading edge firm. Future Growth in US - No plans have been made to expand in the US.

    Advice to Management

The management has done a wonderful job of navigating the latest crisis, but needs to make clear their plans for the operations in the US.

    Pros

Diversity. Thin organization for how large it is, so when you are promoted you can make a real impact. Lots of global opportunity in the IT realm.

    Cons

Location for IT folks in Chicago region is tough - in Lake Forrest - but the building is extremely comfortable to work in.

    Advice to Management

Increase the mix of internal to external resources
