I worked at HSBC Holdings full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Worked hard. Made lots of money. Worked lots of hours. Made lifetime friends.

    Cons

Cold calls, long hours, and learned management can make or break a team.

I have been working at HSBC Holdings full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Due to fines/being under consent orders, job will end soon, hopefully with severance. Management remote close to 100% of the time, so no one will be looking over your shoulder while you're in the office. There are some good people there who know what they're doing.

    Cons

Good place to work if you are a sociopath/narcissist with a good social mask; you will do well and go far. If you're not, keep looking. Management chaotic, no clear direction, with no accountability and blame shifted downwards to employees. Millions wasted on "Culture Transformation". Believe what you hear in the news. Worker bees shoved into call center cubicles, 14 in an open area, while larger management cubes go unused due to being remote 99% of the time.

    Advice to Management

Don't be the last one out the door. There's a reason senior management is bailing with retirement packages.

I have been working at HSBC Holdings full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I work in HTS in Tampa. The compensation is good for the area, benefits are great. You can lead and make decisions.

    Cons

No growth or advancement in the last 5 years. Stigma of the deferred prosecution agreement has caused adverse mindset, no risk taking, no growth.

    Advice to Management

Vision shouldn't change every calendar year.

    Pros

Great colleagues, lots of opportunity to make an impact, liberal remote work policy, lots of vacation time for people who've been here a while.

    Cons

Very limited mobility these days in light of shrinking presence in US, and the regulatory oversight/scrutiny. Fear has replaced prudence and as a result the business is stagnant and not growing.

    Pros

Ability to work remotely at home.

    Cons

HSBC Technology Services decision to exit Florida which resulted in the layoff of 90plus employees.

    Advice to Management

Proactively listen to what employees are saying. Do not ignore remote employees.

    Pros

World class experiences with product owners, customers, and other parts of an international company. Market compensation and many chances to move within the company. You can experience a lot here.

    Cons

Change is at a slow scale. New projects will take at least a year to complete. In the US there is a high degree of regulation so the US has little mobility. If you can get to Canada, HK or the UK then there are more opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Find a way to make the projects more atomic. Iterate and take incremental changes. The requirements will always be changing as life changes so why take a year to find out if you built what was expected?

    Pros

Great internatonal bank to work for. Very good benefits. If you work on international projects in IT, its a great opportunity to work with people in Asia or Europe or Latin America. As usual it's a big world wide bank so is beaucratic.

    Cons

Beaureaucray and red tape. Unfortunately they are pulling out of US. They don't like US since the bad decision to buy Household and the fiasco in 2008 with regards to mortgage issues.

    Advice to Management

    Listen to employee comments.

I worked at HSBC Holdings full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent salary and benefits . Wonderful (immediate) co -workers. Good Unit Managers ( on the whole) I gained a lot of valuable knowledge and skills.

    Cons

Out of touch and disconnected middle and upper management. Horrific domestic and global reputation because of criminal acts. Constantly changing and poorly implemented policies due to intense regulatory scrutiny as a consequence of the illegal activities. Too big and extremely bureaucratic. Atrocious and incomplete training program. Consumer Mortgage Lending portfolio is being sold off (gradually) . As a result, there are plans to close the Tampa and Brandon facilities. Uncertain future in North America. Many angry and resentful employees.

    Advice to Management

The Culture Transformation is small step in the right direction, but too little, too late.

    Pros

Salary and opportunities to work abroad

    Cons

Political environment, lots of preferred people. You need to be part of the "trust" circle.

    Advice to Management

Leadership is weak, most of managers and directors work by imposing fear to employees.
