Great for entry level consultants, no room for growth when you're ready

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Mississauga, ON (Canada)

I worked at HSO full-time for more than 3 years

ProsYou get first hand experience at many scenarios. Non management co-workers are supportive. Good benefits package and extra days off on top of your vacation.

ConsWhen you're ready for more of a challenge, there isn't any room to move. Management will interview you but hire externally instead. What is more frustrating is that your manager created your development plan and after successfully completing it you are deemed not ready.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease be consistent and follow through on company policies instead of making excuses.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

WSPS tries hard to show they are a decent employer to the public, but internally they are a mess

Head Office Staff (Current Employee)
Mississauga, ON (Canada)

I have been working at HSO

ProsWork life balance was great here, deadlines were set but they were soft deadlines - as long as you got the work done in a reasonable amount of time it was acceptable. This resulted in a low stress work environment. The benefits are decent, but not as wonderful as they claim they are, the same level of coverage is offered in many large organizations.

ConsThe top heavy management/senior management employs bullying tactics to steer the company. There were threats of job loss, poor performance reviews if you questioned the direction, which is unacceptable for a company promoting health and safety in the work place.

It appears that most of the senior management have worked in the system for most of their careers (WSPS was an amalgamation of several h&s organizations) and have lost touch with the business world and what the job market offers.

WSPS also misrepresents themselves as government agency when they are not. Even their logo is a knock off of the Ontario Public services logo. They use this to appear to have more authority than they actually do.

Advice to Senior ManagementBelieve in your own teachings - unsafe work practices, toxic work environment, bullying tactics are not what you sell to our customers... so why do we have them in our own workplace?

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
