Good company that could be better

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

Prosbeing a big publisher enables one to harness resources that may not exist with a smaller publisher

Consbeing a big publisher also tends to stifle innovation and creativity. Not having a mechanism for innovation on all levels of the company, not just the upper levels.

Advice to Senior Managementbe more open to implementing fresh ideas, and set up structure to reward innovation throughout the company

    – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

A sad graveyard of talent waiting to be sold off the Hearst.

Going, Going, Gone Sold to the Highest Bidder (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsGreat editorial staffs — you can't go wrong with the people at Elle and Woman's Day. They're behind on digital, and phrases like "innovation" and "social media" are just buzzwords they throw around—but they try so hard to sound like they know what they're talking about! A lot of freedom to work from home and balance your personal life with your professional duties.

ConsAwful morale. They finally sold it off to Hearst, but it took long enough. A depressing company with people just phoning it in and waiting patiently to land there next job elsewhere. Desks stacks one on top of another and, outside of editorial, everyone hates each other. Senior management is uncommunicative and has little or no concern for anyone outside the C-suite.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop lying to everyone. This is a graveyard of talent. Just be honest to your staff and lay everyone off already.

ConsNo more 401k matching or tuition reimbursement

    Sinking ship

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsGreat co-workers, but it depends what department you're in. Decent vacation time and benefits.

ConsSloppy management, pay cuts, no reviews, no raises, moral circling the train. Fine if you're just working for a paycheck.

Advice to Senior ManagementJust sell us already...

    Most incompetent major publishing company

    Online Editor (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsUnless you work for Elle (or maybe the car books), there are none.

ConsManagement had no idea how to run magazines or websites. Installed incompetent people to run the show. They're not ready for the 21st century--which may explain why they sold off many of their titles. It's impossible to accomplish anything there.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake advice from employees on how to do things right. Get your head out of the sand.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsIf you don't really care about your career and just want a job, this is a good place. You can get away with just about anything, while getting your paycheck.

    ConsThe company is doing poorly
    Layoffs are common
    raises are non-existant
