I worked at Haggin Marketing full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Haggin Marketing had many Fortune 500 clients with lot's of opportunity for growth — as you apply yourself. Haggin Marketing was my "extended family" for many years. Haggin is now SolutionSet and also Ryan Partnership which has a very different culture than Haggin Marketing.

    Cons

Each team within the company had it's own style. This could be irksome when moving from one team to another as they could be "clicky".

    Pros

Best experience there were the great People, their do attitude, and a truly wonderful location. I would have liked to stay longer but.....

    Cons

The same wonderful people that I really really like on a personal level I wouldn't ever trust again when it came to business. Some lies, covered up with half truths, and then no consideration for employees wishes, no matter how clearly they were spelled out. They would do or say absolutely anything to keep the client happy, which I'm all for- but there are better ways to do it than to agree to any and every thing with the personal lives (don't try to have one if you're in their main office) of their employees at stake.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Great can do attitude. Now have that towards your busy bee workers as well, and strike a balance- you may actually end up with a great place to work.

    Pros

Fun people to work with if you do not have a personal life.

    Cons

Sweatshop! Pay is way below market, they will work you day and night, HR is not on your side ever

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop taking any account you can get and let your people have a life outside of work.

    I worked at Haggin Marketing

    Pros

Most the people were fun to be around and diverse. There was always something going on that we could all talk about or participate in. Grew some really good friendships and good working relationships.

    Cons

The management in chicago is not so hot. Hard to tell what they wanted b/c they always talked around and around in circles. Most of the time, they don't even know what they want and come up with what they think is an awesome idea at the 11th hour the night before a pitch is due. This causes everyone to have to work overtime and not have lives. There is really no concern for people's personal lives here b/c everyone on management level lives for the agency, therefore, they are there alllll the time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Should have communicated more and not been so distant. You are in the job of communicating so get better at it. Don't hire people just because they worked at some special agency that was once true to your heart. I know Chicago is a very incsestual city when it comes to advertising experts, but there are other people out there that can do the job.

    Pros

Good list of clients to add to your resume and portfolio.

    Cons

A bit of a sweatshop atmosphere. Very goal and bottom line driven mentality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior Management seem to have an elitist attitude and it trickles down the line. Respect for the little people is definately lacking.

Agreed -- hard to have a life at HMI

    Pros

There are some really smart, funny people at HMI, who are often a pleasure to work with. The health insurance is good.

    Cons

In some areas of the company, it seems like taking lunch breaks or any kind of break at all is frowned upon. Gossip can be rampant, contributing to a sad overall atmosphere of paranoia. Overtime is so common that it can be hard to schedule personal things outside of work hours. Management can be lax about getting around to doing performance reviews. Sometimes it seems that speaking up about issues gets one fired rather than helps solve an issue.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage a better work-life balance; have the management lead by example. There is a world out there beyond marketing materials, believe it or not.
