I worked at Halcrow Group full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Interesting and diverse projects - Intelligent co-workers - Good hours

    Cons

    - salary is not very competitive - the staff is culturally diverse, but the engineering teams are almost entirely men - as a woman engineer, I felt there was not enough gender sensitization of the staff

    Advice to Management

    - conduct gender sensitization of staff - publish hourly rates internally to ensure that women and men are getting paid the same

I worked at Halcrow Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Halcrow had some very talented individual and overall had a good portfolio of project to work on. Since I left it has been acquired by CH2M Hill and not sure how things have changed if at all.

    Cons

    Somewhat slow in recognising achievements

    Advice to Management

There were too many changes trying to reinvent the organisation which in the end only changed titles but not what people where actually doing. Focus on recognising achievement rather than creating titles.

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

Very competitive benefits package. Anachronistic and cordial work environment. Some extremely competent practice leaders and engineering professionals.

    Cons

Sr. management in North America is in turmoil after sudden departure of their key leader. Delta reorganization was poorly thought out and wasted untold hours and $$'s. Legacy requirements of multiple subsidiaries and "CMS" reporting system for time and expenses make it extremely difficult to book projects, submit time, do project analysis, much less actually send out bills. . A very non-entreprenuerial atmosphere as one is rarely rewarded for doing something new, better while people are fired for unknown reasons.

    Advice to Management

Get a new job in a jr. leadership role at a new firm (CH2MHill would be fine). Don't take anything with you from Halcrow except your own professional expertise and your relationships with clients. Running Halcrow into the ground shouldn't be rewarded.

  8. The company is very top heavy and upper management have no regard for employees.

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

Friendly environment. Diverse culture. Opportunity for travel.

    Cons

No work life balance. Management does not listen to employees. Management does not respect employees. Senior Management are not engineers and are making decisions relating to engineering issues they know nothing about.

    Advice to Management

Stop being so clickish and observe and reward those in the company that are doing good work. Only the same few people are recognized and they do nothing for the praise they receive other than gossip.

    Pros

They offer lots of opportunities to travel the world. They are prompt about paying out expense claims. They provide a generous benefits package with disability included at no extra cost to employees.

    Cons

They do not have enough draftsmen, and they frown on the use of the word "draftsman". They have unhappy draftsmen. There are too many people there without engineering credentials who make engineering decisions. They are top heavy. They are too cliquish.

    Advice to Management

Don't let non-engineers make engineering decisions that place professionals in risky positions. Provide more in-house PDH opportunities during lunch hour. Cut non-billable marketing staff if they have not been successful in bringing in clients.

    Pros

Decent pay, international projects, exposure and access to different groups, good mentoring programs

    Cons

confused management leading to bad decision making skills

    Advice to Management

There needs to be a more streamlined focus on winning projects

    Pros

Experienced company; been around for long time Travel opportunities for young staff Respectable office location and work place Generous to interns.

    Cons

Huge company so not very compact Not interested in green design Not really interested in helping new staff settle in. Apathetic and at times hostile leaders.

    Advice to Management

Show interest in new aspiring engineers. It makes all the different. being disinterested in a downer. It reinforces a notion that engineers are aloof.
