Too much Hierarchy, decision making is complex, stringent HR policies that are not easy to modify or consider exception.

Former Employee - Human Resources Intern  in  Houston, TX
Former Employee - Human Resources Intern in Houston, TX

I worked at Halliburton as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Excellent training, HR function is being revamped to more accurately reflect business needs and therefore presents a lot of opportunity and headaches.

    Cons

Slow, bureaucratic, somewhat conservative in its outlook. Onboarding needs serious work and there is definitely a generational skills gap. Oil field services isn't the 'sexiest' industry. Anecdotal evidence says pay is middling for oil and gas.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work very hard on employment branding efforts when going after Master's level students. You have a very good program, be sure to make everyone aware of this.

I have been working at Halliburton full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Lots of training available, multitude of opportunities to move around, especially if you're willing to live abroad. They were good to me as they had decent benefits.

    Cons

Huge organization, so your voice is often not heard. Things move very slowly, so to avoid frustration, best career path is to change jobs every 2 to 3 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to what your individual employees are saying, or else you'll continue to lose them to the competition.

I worked at Halliburton full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

I mainly worked on the R&D group, and had the chance to work with great and brilliant people developing software to solve very complex problems.

There was not shortage of challenges and that along with great people is one of the things that kept working at Halliburton.

Salaries and facilities/amenities were very good.

    Cons

In the last few years things have been going down hill very quickly. Teams have been losing people and the people that stays behind has to take over the work from the people that left; no back fill of positions.

No investment on professional development, and observed that only middle to upper management would benefit from training; everybody else was pointed to learn on the job and the internet. Despite the company having an internal learning system, online and face to face courses were not approved be management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest on the people across the board, keep them motivated, management to be more responsible and mainly accountable for decisions made by them.

I worked at Halliburton full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

A good stable organization, has come a long way to become stable and offers good total rewards. The organization has global footprint which allows staff to work with different cultures. Good transparency for job classifications and packages.

    Cons

Senior Management is very protective to their positions; they do not offer a lot of vertical career development. International assingments are not offered for IT.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to have expand the offering of career development beyond local resources and allow for others to grow.
