    Pros

I moved up to an office job from the working at rigs. Was in a small, new department which all four of us helped develop. Very interesting work learning new software and applying to real-world situations for clients. Great pay and benefits too.

    Cons

It can sometimes be difficult to get moved from one job function to another depending on your manager and his/her resistance to letting you branch out and expand yourself (this is in regards to my position prior to the log analyst position).

    Advice to Management

Recognize when an employee wishes to move on and help them rather than hinder them; that just creates frustration and anger towards the company overall.

    Pros

Good pay, good people, positive work environment, modern facilities, a lot of autonomy, international scope, access to information needed to do the job.

    Cons

Sensitivity to fluctuations in the oil and gas market, a somewhat tarnished reputation based on huge government contracts, not as technologically advanced administratively as might be expected despite having leading edge systerms.

    Advice to Management

Do some benchmarking regarding best-in-class companies, provide more secure channels for employee commentary, go overboard building and maintaining a positive corporate image.

    Pros

Never a dull moment. Always something new. Great comraderie between the working employees.

    Cons

Very little chance to advance. Leads will rarely give newer employees a chance to learn, let alone succeed

    Advice to Management

Be more open minded. Mistakes are how people learn. Allow your newer employees a chance to show you their skills and potential, rather than ignoring a new perspective on situations.

    Pros

    (1) Completing a project requires teamwork from contributors in several disciplines, and this was apparent in the past at Halliburton. (2) The company is a good place to deeply learn a narrow set of skills.

    Cons

    (1) Employees are pigeonholed with little opportunity to expand their horizons, as opposed to Schlumberger, where employees are forced to move from their comfort zones. (2) Also, so many processes are required that there is little time or energy left for creative thought. (3) Even direct managers are inaccessible, though it makes little difference because (4) every decision is made by the manager two levels up. (5) This leads to an air of defeatism - everything is bogged down in bureaucracy. (6) Lack of movement from silos does not build leaders for tomorrow. (7) Staffing is so thin that, when changing roles there is seldom backfilling, and so the old job can never be left behind.

    Advice to Management

Move to stop the erosion of positive outlook among the employee base. Under the poorer conditions, the best employees will seek opportunities elsewhere, leaving only coasters behind.
