Rich history, challenging present, uncertain future

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsIt's a "feel good" place to work. People are nice to each other for the most part and often develop deep friendships. You're surrounded by a lot of wonderful artwork at headquarters and many talented, dedicated, creative people. The cafeteria and cafe are quality and the benefits are excellent. The mission and values are positive; there's a history of philanthropy on the part of the corporation and the Hall family that makes a positive impact in the community.

ConsThe core business is a mature industry and recent reorganizations have meant there are fewer people doing more work. There is a lack of courage on the part of managers to act, despite tough talk by senior leaders. There's a pervading fear that the best days may be in the past.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe bold. Make tough choices. Don't be afraid to make mistakes and don't take too long trying to decide what to do. Stop looking to consultant, competitors, and key customers for direction on the way forward.

    Great company to work for

Sales Associate (Current Employee) Jackson, MS

ProsFun, flexible, great job for high school and college students or retiree. If you enjoy helping someone find the right gift or card for their special one, this is the job for you. It makes you feel great that you had a part in making someone feel special .

ConsSometimes it could be slow paced and repetitive but other than that it is a pretty mellow environment.

Excellent Internship Opportunities at Hallmark Headquarters

Intern (Former Employee) Kansas City, MO

ProsHallmark's college internship program is well organized and pays extremely well compared to other summer internships. You have an opportunity to learn about a lot of different areas of the company and meet students from a wide variety of majors (design, business, engineering, etc.) which was a bonus compared to internships that are targeted only towards a students with particular interests. As a young intern, I was inspired by Hallmark's corporate culture. Interns who receive strong recommendations are typically invited back for subsequent summers and offered full-time positions upon graduation.

ConsI heard complaints from many of the interns that were placed at locations other than the Kansas City Headquarters (mostly engineering or supply chain). They were more isolated from the general excitement surrounding Hallmark Headquarters and many of the unofficial social activities.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the good work with the internship program.

    Great part-time job!

    Retail Merchandiser (Current Employee)

ProsI have worked for Hallmark as a Retail Merchandiser for almost a year. The hours are flexible, enjoy the independent work environment and the friendly and helpful store management and staff.

ConsThere are times when not enough time is allocated to complete required tasks and it would be great if we could donate the cards and gifts to worthwhile organizations when a season is over.

    Fun job.

Retail Merchandiser (Former Employee) Round Rock, TX

ProsFun with flexibility. Able to adapt to your personal schedule. Able to use some of your personal creativity to mane your stores your own.

ConsDisorganized. Need to have a better system for storage of product on the floor and in the back room. Some vendors are rude and uncooperative.

Advice to Senior ManagementImprove relations with vendors.

    Retail at Hallmark

Sales Associate (Former Employee) San Antonio, TX

ProsThe employee discount and having a part time job.

ConsI was a part-time associate After Christmas had finished.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide training in everything the store offers to all employees, part-time or full-time, key holder or not. Post schedules for 2 weeks at a time since that's when payday occurs.

This DM will run you off

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsCo workers and discount. The customers are friendly at times but some have to be babied. Great card selection. Ok.

ConsOur new DM came in and immediately started running off the managers. Years of experience and talent gone. They were all older so I'm not sure if she was intimidated by them or just did not like them. They were put on performance improvement plans over nothing. They are all happy now with their new jobs so she is the loser. All new managers are arrogant and lazy.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou have been advised but you choose to look the other way. Hallmark is going down fast. It will not last another 5 years.
