I worked at Hallmark for more than 10 years

    Pros

It's a "feel good" place to work. People are nice to each other for the most part and often develop deep friendships. You're surrounded by a lot of wonderful artwork at headquarters and many talented, dedicated, creative people. The cafeteria and cafe are quality and the benefits are excellent. The mission and values are positive; there's a history of philanthropy on the part of the corporation and the Hall family that makes a positive impact in the community.

    Cons

The core business is a mature industry and recent reorganizations have meant there are fewer people doing more work. There is a lack of courage on the part of managers to act, despite tough talk by senior leaders. There's a pervading fear that the best days may be in the past.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be bold. Make tough choices. Don't be afraid to make mistakes and don't take too long trying to decide what to do. Stop looking to consultant, competitors, and key customers for direction on the way forward.

I have been working at Hallmark full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

There's a lot of creative talent. There is a cafe with Starbucks coffee and employees get a discount on Hallmark products. People are nice.

    Cons

There are a lot of layers of approvals. It takes a long time to get projects approved and actually have the ability to do them. Iif you have any new ideas it takes years and a village to make anything happen. They are not up to date in the digital space and have a hard time understanding new technology in general.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut some of the layers of management and alter processes so employees actually have autonomy over their jobs and can start new initiatives easily. Everyone wants to be successful in their job so allowing them to actually be successful without having to sell their ideas to the entire company would be helpful.

I have been working at Hallmark full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Customers are friendly; most people who come in are regulars and will get to know you after a while. They are really appreciative of your efforts. It's really nice working with them! You also get a great discount.

    Cons

No chance of promotions within this company. Also don't expect raises; they will put off giving them to you and, if you don't remember to ask, will "forget" to give it to you. Company's HR ignores issues, especially where other coworkers are concerned. Pushed to sell Christmas ornaments over half a year before Christmas starts.

I worked at Hallmark as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Hallmark's college internship program is well organized and pays extremely well compared to other summer internships. You have an opportunity to learn about a lot of different areas of the company and meet students from a wide variety of majors (design, business, engineering, etc.) which was a bonus compared to internships that are targeted only towards a students with particular interests. As a young intern, I was inspired by Hallmark's corporate culture. Interns who receive strong recommendations are typically invited back for subsequent summers and offered full-time positions upon graduation.

    Cons

I heard complaints from many of the interns that were placed at locations other than the Kansas City Headquarters (mostly engineering or supply chain). They were more isolated from the general excitement surrounding Hallmark Headquarters and many of the unofficial social activities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work with the internship program.

I have been working at Hallmark part-time for less than a year

    Pros

I have worked for Hallmark as a Retail Merchandiser for almost a year. The hours are flexible, enjoy the independent work environment and the friendly and helpful store management and staff.

    Cons

There are times when not enough time is allocated to complete required tasks and it would be great if we could donate the cards and gifts to worthwhile organizations when a season is over.

    Pros

Fun with flexibility. Able to adapt to your personal schedule. Able to use some of your personal creativity to mane your stores your own.

    Cons

Disorganized. Need to have a better system for storage of product on the floor and in the back room. Some vendors are rude and uncooperative.

I worked at Hallmark full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Over 20 years working in a very creative and open minded company when it came to its employees lifestyles. Cared about its employees and the Halls family so pround to work for.

    Cons

It's busines unfortunately gets smaller with every grandparent that passes away. Lots of politics and business people control the creative process too much.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let go of the card category and focus your energy on becoming relative to today's changing customer. I'm afraid too late.
