I worked at Halloween City part-time

    Pros

Fun seasonal job, as long as you know how to handle stress well. You get a merchandise discount for working there.

    Cons

Horrible management! At times, I had to do the assistant manager's job for them. Plus, we rarely got our breaks on time. Sometimes, we didn't get our breaks at all. None of us were even shown the training video until 2 weeks after we opened.

    Advice to Management

Hire managers that actually care about not breaking the law.

  5. They throw you out on the sales floor with absolutely no knowledge

    Pros

-Temporary/seasonal position that ends early November: start earning money for the holidays. -Understandable with school hours and understands if you already have another job.

    Cons

You are thrown out on the floor after watching a very dry video. You are expected to answer customer's questions. That wouldn't be a problem if they actually trained their staff. Also, while you're at the fitting rooms, you have to watch customers while making sure they don't take the entire costume out. This annoys the customers, who in turn pester the employees who cannot do anything about it.

    Advice to Management

Please train staff more! Being thrown out on the floor and unable to help customers is a painful experience.

    Pros

Perfect if you love Halloween Lot of work / busy, not boring Great Employee Discount Can have fun working in costume!

    Cons

Temp Work only. Infexible pay rate scale Cannot get 40 hours as an effort to avoid overtime Poor treatment - people treated as "throw-aways" Person called out sick once - it cost them a better position. Business only for the quick hit profit, do not care about "Temps" Poor hiring - LOCATION was in NOT place before job offer. HOPE you get a manager that knows how to work with people.

I worked at Halloween City full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Halloween can be fun, with the right management staff (this includes RM, DM, & GM) this can be a wonderful experience. Also getting recalled year after year can look good on a resume in this economy. Pay is good if you are upper management.

    Cons

Poor pay if you are a sales associate, assistant manager or executive assistant manager. Having your cut hours to be able to "Bank" them to use later to close the store. District and Regional managers minimizing opening and closing staff to save money during build outs and break downs. Only using management for build outs and breakdowns i.e. having 4 or 5 middle aged women or 4 or 5 people in their early 60's to unload a truck, build the shelving and walls in addition to repricing merchandise in a 10 hour day. Poor choices for Regional and Distict Managers. Giving the Managers increased paperwork in the form of reports that they do not have time to actually run the store. LAZY District managers that dictate by text or e-mail. District Managers that choose favorites and subsequently damage other stores. Corporate cutting corners causing staffers time and money. Cutbacks that cause salary employees to work 60 to 80 hours a week. When you do the math on it store managers make less an hour than the associates. Stores are told that there are "no returns", customers are given the opportunity to try on costumes, check strings of lights etc before making their purchaes so that does give the consumer some wiggle room to return an item, but customers will take it out of context to use it for every situation. When reported to higher management they need to back up the decision maker and not give into the customer. Not working hands on in a store upper management does not see the "snow ball" effect they enable. Treating employees like they are idiots, especially returning employees.

    Advice to Management

Be careful with whom you place in positions of Regional and District Managers. When you hire someone from a competitor that was fired, THERE WAS A REASON WHY THEY WERE FIRED! Avoid managers who think they are gods. Restructore and revise. I would start from the ground up. You guys are cutting the wrong corners, becoming too political and corporate. You have gems hidden in corners of your company, i.e: store managers, assistant managers. Contact them to help. because of your choices for my RM and DM I will not be returning for the 2013 season and I ran one of your highest yieldiig stores for 3 years.

    Pros

If you love the holiday and fast paced retail this is the job. Great opportunity to up-sell. Nice variety of products.

    Cons

Company has been changing. Not quite as unique as in previous years. It appears to be heading down the *big box* store mentality, lot less personal, not as unique in product and visual displays to entice customers. Losing that something special and customers will just shop the big box.

    Advice to Management

Don't loose touch of the roots and what made Halloween USA a success and a definite customer destination for Halloween. Keep the unique products that can't be found in other box stores. Keep the ambiance in the stores via unique displays and music that can be purchased.
