Cons – No opportunities for advancement or increased compensation.

Pros – Taking time off was extremely easy. Just filled out a form and it was done. Also, we rarely worked late, so picking up kids, coaching, etc., was completely doable.

Medical benefits were great and had lots of flexibility in regards to coverage and price. I am young, never get sick and have only been hospitalized once. I chose FULL coverage with a $2,000 deductible and my co-pay is like $38 a month!!! I cover the co-pay with my medical spending account - if necessary. I used the MSA only one year! It is like getting full healthcare coverage for nearly free!

I have pretty much independence in what I do and don't have Supervisors hovering all over me. As long as I do a good job, I get a lot of freedom.

Cons – There is ZERO sharing of information or talent between departments. There are dozens of other PR Managers working in the County. We have NEVER met each other or shared ideas, thoughts, etc.

The County is strapped for money and they are CONSTANTLY firing. There is no money for basic public relations supplies like laptop computers, PowerPoint software, basic printing. My office buys pens and pencils once a year. Color printing is outlawed. Website updates are nonexistent because we have no money to pay for IT support. We actually distribute printed materials with the previous elected officials name because we can't afford printing costs.

Also, there have been no raises in four years and bonuses were eliminated over six years ago.

Advice to Senior Management – I realize the County is broke. But, the minute the economy recovers I believe there is going to be a mass exodus of professionals (IT, Communications, Accounting) who can take their skills elsewhere. I would have Human Resources start figuring out what to do now!
