I have been working at Hamilton Sundstrand full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Considering what was required out of the person, the pay was high
    Great chemistry
    Food after important meetings
    Good test labs

    Cons

Didn't keep to the job title or job description
    Very slow moving company
Management assumes smooth operation, doesn't double check on work progress/work started/work finished
Will only listen to one level lower, if they dug deeper then they would be a better company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Whats more important the quarterly books, or the company 2/3 years from now

I have been working at Hamilton Sundstrand full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Edge of Technological Advancement on their products.
    Good Education Benefits
    Decent pay.

    Cons

Not many opportunities for career advancement
Generational Differences and culture shock not favorable for Young Professionals

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep promises on increasing opportunities for young professionals, and tackling issues brought up by them. A ton of my younger coworkers keep leaving the company, and current and new ones still have the "I'm only here for 3-5 years" mentality.

    Pros

    Cons

Government projects are a different breed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The consensus-building was a bit excessive. I often times saw the necessary path forward without needing to go around the room twice to build the consensus. That seemed to be a big waste of time to me, however it WAS the corporate culture, at least in the division
    I was in.

I have been working at Hamilton Sundstrand full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Education benefits are excellent. Work environment challenging, but not overwhelming. There are many opportunities worldwide, and as part of United Technologies there are opportunities to cross over to other divisions.

    Cons

Deadlines can be stressful at times, expectations are high. UTC parent organizations has high corporate goals requiring very focused activities. You won't sit around very long if you don't contribute.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Continue communicating to employees

This is a good place to learn engineering skills. They promote learning and everyone is very helpful when trying to complete tasks.

    Cons

I have been working at Hamilton Sundstrand as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

It is a very well established company, being party of UTC. There is a huge, huge number of different projects available to work on.

    Cons

Most people have been there for 20+ and the projects are not very fast paced so it might be a little slow for those just getting out of college.

I have been working at Hamilton Sundstrand as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

The company pays very well, has perks, and has tons of room for growth opportunities. UTC is such a massive company that you cant help but to find a division you want to work for between all of their subsidiaries. The internship program is outstanding. The experience you gain truly will be the difference maker between you and another candidate for an open position. Cant rave about the internship program enough. If you work hard, you'll be recognized

    Cons

If you want to stay ahead of the game and do a thorough job on your assignments, you need to put in the time. You'll be working over 40 hours a week (i think OT is paid for full timers but not 100%.) Assignments can be overwhelming

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fix up the HR side of Hamilton. They frequently screw important things up that have serious consequences.

I have been working at Hamilton Sundstrand full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Talented pool of dedicated employees. Reasonable pay and educational benefits.

    Cons

I have been employed at Hamilton Sundstrand for 11 years and have watched the company de-evolve since UTC took over. UTC is great at talking the talk but not walking the walk. They continually over commit and under deliver to their customers. UTC thinks ACE (their business system back engineered from Toyota) has all the answers. It is more of a farce than viable system.

Management will do almost anything to win a new program even if it means creating a no win situation when it comes to manufacturing costs. A perfect example is the debacle of the APS 5000 APU for the Boeing 787. Most estimates would put R&D at around $100 million thus far and we sell them for roughly 1/3 of what it costs to manufacture them. The result is that UTC has decided to source our work to Poland in an effort to save money. This is an easy fix for a poorly run company and probably won't work but looks good on paper.

In our meetings COPQ (cost of poor quality) is often referred to yet they continue to source critical parts to third world countries only to end up with reliability problems and high warranty costs. UTC also focuses heavily on ROS (return on sales) a metric which shows % profit on product sales. We are continually told that our ROS is too low and should be in the neighborhood of 15%. What they fail to realize is that ROS has steadily declined since their take over of Hamilton Sundstrand.

What has taken place at Hamilton Sundstrand should serve as a cautionary tale for the employees of Goodrich. UTC has no interest in manufacturing in this country and in a perfect world would produce nothing and collect profit while not paying taxes. Outsourcing is heading your way too.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take time to listen to your employees. Find value in their feedback and concerns, utilize their expertise. Hire and promote talented individuals rather than "yes" men and ACE gurus. Do a RRCA (relentless root cause analysis) of ACE to determine if it really value added or just window dressing. Produce a business plan that focuses on IN sourcing not OUT sourcing and maybe you'll become the world class company you claim to be.
