I worked at Hampton City School District full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Excellent benefits: health insurance, dental, vision, life insurance, retirement.

    Cons

Bad area, unprofessional, un-supportive, not enough pay for the amount of work you do. Be prepared to have no life outside of work. The company values are off. They will pass any student to raise their graduation rate. They will override your classroom rules and policies in order to get the parents to stop bothering the administration.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Support your teachers.

I worked at Hampton City School District full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

There are great people there, and if you are fortunate, you will get to work with some dedicated and kind people. Great access to technology in the classrooms, and opportunities to learn how to use it. Some of the students and parents were absolutely wonderful people to know.

    Cons

The Principal sets the tone and culture for the building. When bullies grow up, they become Bully-Bosses. Also there were always new initiatives, new programs and new "duties" without ever reducing any of the existing workload. Even the best and brightest are overwhelmed, underpaid, and exhausted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please pay attention to the climate surveys and the number of professionals who leave one school for another, or quit the profession altogether. If you see a sharp increase, there is something wrong. Eventually, when nothing changed as a result of the climate surveys, many people just gave the principal "passing scores" because working with them after the survey results came out was even worse than the rest of the time, each year. They would try to find out who wrote certain comments and who gave the leadership low scores. Then there was the favoritism, the unprofessional remarks and belittling certain people, and exalting the same ones over and over.

    Pros

Very organized teachers and helpful office staff, good substitute job availability system, well managed lunch rooms, detailed crisis management plans.

    Cons

Very large class sizes with very few if no paras for such large early elementary classes, not enough training for substitutes.

I have been working at Hampton City School District full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Investments in upgrading technology access for teachers and students. Professional development opportunities and the school system has networked with local, state and national history, science and academic organizations to allow teachers to earn continuing education credits for recertification, often at no cost to them.

    Cons

Hampton is quick to freeze teacher pay, cut teacher salaries, and cut out essential support personnel due to budget issues. There are no longer Instructional assistants for any elementary grades besides kindergarten and next year, the hours of those instructional assistants may be cut.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The principals of the schools set the work climate in each building. There are some who make their buildings a very unhealthy environment. They seem to go unchecked, while they wreck the morale in the building and the mental, physical and emotional health of their staff. When climate surveys come out, if the results do not flatter them, things only get more tense. Since nothing is actually improved as a result of the climate surveys, teachers and staff decide to just respond to the surveys in a way that will minimize the fall out, rather than giving honest feedback. If you see that as soon as a principal starts in a building, a significant percentage of the teaching staff decides to transfer out of that building that they have been working in for years, it is definitely a signal that that principal is a problem. When you see people who always had favorable evaluations getting lesser scores, it may not be that the teachers performance is slipping. Also when people go to HR and say that they are being bullied at work by the administrator, realize that each person who reports such abuse represents more than themselves. They are just the one out of ten or more with the fortitude to come forward, while others are suffering silently and just trying to wait that person out.

I have been working at Hampton City School District

    Pros

Great team of people to work with in my school. Very helpful staff. Everyone pitches in and looks out for each other. Great benefits and average teacher pay. Treated professionally.

    Cons

Due to the economy few raises in the last few years. Hires a lot of admin from outside of district instead of within.
