Mountain Brook, AL

Former Employee – worked at Hampton Inn

ProsLaid back
Low stress
Great compensation
Great management cooperation with time off
Great management overall
If you are a people person, it's a great job to work on your skills

ConsIt's a very, very boring job at times. Sometimes when you're there working the 3-11 shift, it hits 10, no one walks in, and you're just bored trying to kill time until your shift ends.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep it up, guys! I don't know about other Hampton Inns, but this one has it down. The GM knows what he's doing, and is very fair and understanding with employees.

ProsGood Pay
Flexible Time Off
Friendly guests and staff
Free breakfast
In a nice area of town
Good former management

ConsNo opportunity to move up
No corporate management training (or if there is it wasn't made available)
Incompetent senior management

Advice to Senior ManagementUnderstand not only the administrative side of the business such as payroll and looking at numbers on a report sheet, but also the hospitality and human element of the business. Learn to interact well with both employees and guests.

ProsMorning shifts, ocasional hospitality employee perks at attractions, insurance, cookies, breakfast, employee rate travel.

Conspay, not enugh hours, bad schedualing, PM shifts, 100% guarantee, snotty letters from management, no breaks, boring, getting yelled at by guests, no raises or 10cent raises.

Advice to Senior ManagementUse to be an awesome place to work when employees were given appropriate sitting breaks, as well as, there being clear ruels as to when to 100% people instead of being reprimanded for giving/ not giving the guarantee in different cases. Don't promise a schedual you can't do, pay above minimum wage, and please quit talking over your employees to show off how nice you are when they're talking with a guest, it makes us look and feel bad.

ProsSome the pros of working for Hampton Inn is the ability to receive discounted rates rooms. You receive some benefits if you are a full-time employee.

ConsSome of the cons of working for Hampton Inn is there is not any employee advancement; Poor communication between management and staff and this translate into poor customer services; dissatisfaction of most employees; Poor employee moral.

Advice to Senior ManagementImprove employee moral and management and employee communication.

ProsI'm sure other Hampton Inns are great places to work. You have a lot of downtime. I usually play computer games.

ConsIt was the company I worked for. They had no employee moral or respect. The pay was low due to a 10% pay cut, which no one has yet (2 years later) has gotten back, which means no one in the company full of 20 or so hotels has gotten a raise in the last 2 years. Management treats you poorly, and unless the hotel is losing money they dont care about any problems.

Advice to Senior ManagementCare more. That's all. All's you have to say is I want to help make this a nice place to work. But you will never because all you need is a warm body.

Former Employee – worked at Hampton Inn

Prosbenefits of brand, in-house benefits for management, easy hotel to sell

Conspoor communication with upper mgmnt, no training, no job performance reviews, no raises, excepted to work average of 50-60 hours weekly, including other departments

Advice to Senior Managementneed job descriptions, allow for family time, communicate with employees through departmental meetings. Give employees incentives, bonuses. give performance reviews with raises based on performance (not just a review year after year).

Former Employee – worked at Hampton Inn

ProsThe heavy reporting helps me currently. It has allowed me to take the tools that I learned on to the next employer.

ConsThe management company micro-manages more than should be allowed for someone to develop professionally. It limited the opportunites outside of their company, because with micro-managing, a manager is not allowed to flourish. I was lucky to find someone that would give me the opportunity to get over the micro-managing and allow my professional and personal growth

Advice to Senior Managementnothing, it's too late.

Coralville, IA

Current Employee – been working at Hampton Inn

ProsThe pay is fairly good in comparison to other entry-level service industry jobs, and the pay raise that accompanied the promotion to supervisor far outweighed the additional workload. Scheduling is fairly flexible as well, depending on the current staffing levels.

ConsThe main issue is the lack of effectiveness of all levels of management, from the property level on up. The local managers typically have their hands tied by the management of the independent operating company and the brand. Upper-level management tends to hire people who are willing to be told what to do as local managers, so the property-level management ends up being a group of pushovers who are very poor managers.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou cannot expect to keep your thumb on everything that happens by hiring a bunch of worthless individuals to work under you and run a successful business at the same time. Incompetent managers and employees don't mix well with truly good companies. Your best option is to let go of your authoritarian approach to management. You might be surprised at the success you'll have.

ProsCompetitive pay
Great Work environment
The Senior Management team cares about the employees and seeks to counsel them towards advancing their career.
Opportunities to meet many different people

ConsThere really weren't many downsides, it is a retail type position so the customers can occasionally be rude or hard to deal with

Advice to Senior ManagementThe management team does a great job, cares about the property, cares about the guests, cares about the employees. Keep up the good work!

Memphis, TN

Former Employee – worked at Hampton Inn

ProsGreat beginning career job - good to learn how to run all departments and always a strong support system with Hilton Hotels

ConsLimited Service is a nightmare - especially when the management company doesn't care about their employees. Maximum Hospitality offers no formal training nor long-term benefits. They provide no feedback nor review any of their managers in a timely or efficient manner. Hampton Inns are O.K. but not under this management company.

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn as much as you can and move on - unless you want to be a GM for life @ hampton, just use it as a learning exp.
