Pros
Great benefits for a store employee: 20 hours of paid time off per year, scheduled increase in compensation, flexible hours, great store leadership team
Cons
Employee turnover is very high, standards of professionalism for store employees is low, no employee discount, store manager turnover is also very high.
Advice to Senior Management
The associate cohesiveness needs attention if the company itself wants to expand its 170-some stores. It seems that since 2007 the leadership team has not had a solid working relationship and that is reflected down to the store employees and front end team.
Pros
It's easy to get time off when I need it and my co-workers aren't bad. Some of the middle managers here are okay.
Cons
Upper management does not respect or acknowledge us. Our parent company (Delhaize of America) is making cuts left and right. Benefits get cut every year and it's done with a smile. This company is getting worse and worse to work for. They used to give out 50 cent raises per year and now you are lucky if you get half of that. I really wish that employees had a voice and force to protect them from these yearly cuts. In other words, let the lower level employees have a union or something that will protect their benefits.
Advice to Senior Management
If upper management took the time to listen to their employees and could protect us from the parent company making all of these cuts, everything would be so much better. Give Hannaford back to us, Delhaize!!!
Pros
If you are a people person then dealing with people everyday. Making someones day better with a simple nice conversation
Cons
You have to completely kiss your managers butt if you ever want to move up in the company. You get minimum wage. Even if the assistant store manager likes you and sees how much knowledge you have in retail and management in my particular store since I was not a preppy lady my immediate manager would not recommend me, therefore completely prohibiting me moving up in the company. If your immediate manager does not like you or knows you know her job better than she does and get along with all associates unlike her you are at a standstill!
Advice to Senior Management
Do not hold an employee back because one manager does not like the employees knowledge and customer service skills overcoming theirs! Absolutely ridiculous that one single person holds another back from growth in the company
Pros
The pay is alright, and the work is not very strenuous or challenging. Also, most of the employees (non-management) are decent individuals.
Cons
Upper management can be aloof, most of the time you only get promoted based on favoritism/nepotism; not on actual job performance!
Advice to Senior Management
Before you promote people into higher positions within the company/store, actually take time to ask and see if they deserve the promotion.
Pros
Very good benefits, good pay, bonus program for managers. It's a pleasant atomosphere to be in and allows the chance to interact with a lot of good people, whether they are customers or co-workers.
Cons
Negative rienforcement seems to be the theme when it comes to performance evaluations. Typical in retail, when hours get cut they shave from the bottom, the hourly associates, and more falls on the plate of the salaried mid managers. Store managers seem to exploit this and what was once a "once in awhile" task becomes the norm. As a salaried manager if you dont mind: bagging when ever called, doing cash depoits, working in the dairy and frozen cooler, unloading the delivery truck, giving a thorough dept. checkout, grinding hamburg, cake writing, putting up left over grocery cases that the night crew "couldn't" put up, working a 13 page exception report, dept. and cross merchandising replenishment , product ordering, bagging again and responding to customer issues in any given shift only to receive a "partically meets performance expectations" you'll wont mind being part of the Hannaford management team.
Advice to Senior Management
Give positive praise and find the good in what ever a particular manager does as opposed to the constant negative rienforcement. and feedback.
Pros
Great opportunity to move up in the company!
Cons
Not enough praise for doing good or beyond exceptional work from managers.
Advice to Senior Management
Praise your employees, it goes a long way!
Pros
Excellent benefits package and salary, progressive company looking to hire new, young employees and invest in their future. Great management team.
Cons
Could use better on-site facilities and employee recognition programs. It is a very 'corporate' environment, don't be expecting a very diverse workload.
Advice to Senior Management
Come and visit the employees more often and thank them for the hard work they are giving you. A little thanks goes a long way.
Pros
Loved my coworkers. Everyone got along, formed really good relationships. Management very understanding that you have a personal life. Getting time off was VERY easy.
Cons
Worked really hard and rarely got recognized. Pay was absolute crap for what you do. Having to deal with customers who have nothing better to do than make your life miserable.
Advice to Senior Management
You should recognize your employees more. They work twice as hard as you do and deal with a lot more.
Pros
Flexible Scheduling
Good Benefits
Good first-time job
Cons
Management doesnt care about associates
Management plays favorites to an extreme, and I'm saying this as one of the favorites
Advice to Senior Management
Stop treating our associates poorly and treat them likes people. Everyone one plays favorites but extremes are bad.
Pros
Good Retail position, Good work environment for HS student, good pay, the employees that work there are usually pretty nice.
Cons
Pulling carts sucks, standing on your feet for a while can get tiring, the hours can sometimes be bad. thats about it
