In retrospect, my time there felt like a stressfully-bad dream.

I have been working at Harness Dickey & Pierce full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

This employer provides good health, dental, and vision insurance. There is also a year-end bonus, amount of which is dependent upon length of employment and whether one works for an attorney or not. The vacation/sick time is industry norm.

    Cons

HDP has a very cliquish atmosphere and nepotism abounds! It flies under the radar, but morale is low and there is unnecessary management-caused stress.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Morale is low - start caring about who is actually doing the work. Stop playing obvious favorites. Get serious about managing effectively.

    Pros

The firm provided mentor-ship training system, which was very good. As a result, you would receive very good professional training.

    medical insurance was very good.

    Cons

Office politics, gossip, and bad tempered people. Not many business development opportunities. Introducing potential clients are not appreciated as you would expect.

Salary not as high as peer firms in DC area.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA. I no longer work for the firm and I have no advice to management.

    Cons

The pay is lousy and the benefits are terrible. Management is the worst I've ever seen, completely incompetent. Staff is equally bad, very childish and high school like. Partners are very untrustworthy.

    Pros

Really none-this used to be a great place to work--then they hired an awful HR lady we all nicknamed the Beast--she holds vendettas, fires older workers for no reason except to increase her bonus and basically knows nothing about running an office and gets paid six figures to do it--cant believe they havent wisened up

    Cons

See above it speaks for itself

    Pros

Good location outside DC. Plenty of covered parking. Decent office.

    Cons

The partners will stab you in the back - they will smile to your face and talk trash behind your back*. I had to leave once this became apparent. Their lack of respect for any associate who makes a mistake WHILE LEARNING the patent practice is disgusting. Contrary to what they tell you, they have zero tolerance.

*It's the quiet one you should watch out for (you know who you are).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have a little more respect for your employees - after all, they are the ones making you rich.

The Reston office is truly a "churn and burn" patent mill.

I have been working at Harness Dickey & Pierce full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Relatively close to DC.
Reston is a nice place to live.
High volume of patent work allows for development of prosecution skill set.

    Cons

The office culture does not foster an open environment of asking questions or going "up the chain" to find answers. The training here is done by the desire to avoid getting yelled at. The partners humiliate associates as a form of "motivation," and partners will hide the ball on a daily basis.

They primarily focus on efficiency and dollars, which can be a good indicator of productivity, but the staff turnover will hit certain associates very hard and result in very different numbers for similar workers with comparable skill levels. The partners, however, do not care or sympathize with this. This has been very clear to me during my time here.

The turnover in this office among the staff and the attorneys is high for a very good reason.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think about how you motivate your employees and the type of work environment you have created by the very steep review process (i.e., pyramid scheme) that you have established.

I worked at Harness Dickey & Pierce

    Pros

Salary was competitive, offices were nice, lawyers went to lunch (when not stabbing each other in the back)

    Cons

Management was completely unable to judge the work of associates, and petty, and disengaged. Not enough work to go around. Time was cut WAY TOO MUCH - without explanation - allowing partners to get paid for doing very little work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do NOT let associates supervise other associates. Judge people on their ability to do the work.

I worked at Harness Dickey & Pierce

    Pros

The office provides generally nice legal training, fair benefit, plenty of office supplies, and nice office to sit in to legal professionals. IT department is good.

    Cons

Senior management lacks of transparency. Little opportunity of promotion. At least one partner is very hard to work with. You may be yelled all day. The working environment could be psychologically stressful.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior management should be more transparent and be more respectful to others. Don't forget that people are what make an organization great.
