    Pros

Good pay & benefits. Travel and experience once in a lifetime opportunities.

    Cons

Long work days. Tough to balance work and life. Top Heavy, & Executives have no outside production experience.

    Advice to Management

Need to be open to new ideas. Need fresh faces and positive leaders in Management and Executive level. There is not a great understanding of production, outside of the Oprah Winfrey Show.

    Pros

The benefits, vacation policy, and compensation were all quite generous. From extra days off to employee appreciation gifts, everyone was treated with respect.

    Cons

Not too much to say here. You get what you put in. Work hard, and you'll see the rewards. People who feel entitled will struggle.

    Pros

I worked there for more than 5 years. There are many opportunities to work on exciting creative. The content is inspiring, and the fast paced nature keeps it interesting. There is clearly a lot of upside, most people at the company have been there for years.

    Cons

The fast paced nature is a double edged sword. It's tough to keep up and stay sane. The many layers of management can make creative approval a real challenge.

    Pros

i have been an employee at Harpo for over a decade, working at the height of popularity of The Oprah Winfrey Show, to then transitioning into working on shows for a network / production studio. Salary, health benefits are absolutely top notch for the Chicago area.

    Cons

What great potential there was to turn the Studio into a top notch production facility for the Chicago-land area (or the nation for that matter), has been squandered by the lack of experience, or fortitude from those in top management positions. When those with industry experience have been brought in, they have quickly left due to the fact that they cannot or will not succumb to Harpo's long established mindset. It is also top heavy management, albeit managers are unable to make creative or conducive decisions, creating a wasteland of inefficiency.

    Advice to Management

Get out of the way of yourselves, and you might have an opportunity to regain viewers and employees' enthusiasm and respect.

    Pros

Casual work environment. Ever changing work day

    Cons

Very competitive. Short sited. Much of the management grew up in the company and don't have much outside experience. Nothing to pull from past experiences.

  9. uninspiring, top-heavy, inefficient, uncreative

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

I enjoy the salary, the hours, and the health benefits. In those catagories, Harpo is better than most companies in the production/post-production industry in Chicago.

    Cons

A lot of the top producers have been working here since the early Oprah Show days and know only how to produce that type of show. Creatively, they are a decade behind other production companies. Everything that is worked on at Harpo is over-produced. There are way too many "cooks in the kitchen". Due to the inefficiency, Harpo is probably hemorrhaging money.

    Advice to Management

Need to scale back on the number of producers. Need more communication between managment and employees. (weekly or monthly meetings/emails)
