Culture of the Company

Associate Producer (Former Employee)

I worked at Harpo as a contractor for more than a year

ProsThere's a 're-imagining' vibe that's trying to push out front at Harpo, 2+ years after The Oprah Winfrey Show went off the year, so there's a certain buzz. There is great potential for the facilities, production facilities but they're not sure how to harness all those assets.

ConsThe biggest con I found is that some of the 'hold-overs' from the Oprah Show that are in management positions aren't up to the task of spearheading new programming and/or leading a team. I hate to say it, but it almost had that stagnant 'government workplace' vibe to it - you know where everyone is just kind of waiting for their pension to kick in.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe open (honestly open- not just pay lip service) to hearing new ideas and trusting that there are incredibly talented 'outsiders' who can help get the company back on its feet.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

I worked at Harpo full-time for more than 5 years

ProsCasual work environment. Ever changing work day

ConsVery competitive. Short sited. Much of the management grew up in the company and don't have much outside experience. Nothing to pull from past experiences.

uninspiring, top-heavy, inefficient, uncreative

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL

I have been working at Harpo

ProsI enjoy the salary, the hours, and the health benefits. In those catagories, Harpo is better than most companies in the production/post-production industry in Chicago.

ConsA lot of the top producers have been working here since the early Oprah Show days and know only how to produce that type of show. Creatively, they are a decade behind other production companies. Everything that is worked on at Harpo is over-produced. There are way too many "cooks in the kitchen". Due to the inefficiency, Harpo is probably hemorrhaging money.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to scale back on the number of producers. Need more communication between managment and employees. (weekly or monthly meetings/emails)

I worked at Harpo

ProsPractice makes perfect. Everyone here is the best at what they do in the industry, I made good friends I will know my whole life.

ConsWhen you decide to work here you are paid very well but your time is theirs. You have to be very conscious about taking time to go home.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to the people who are in the trenches and don't be isolated in your creativity. Look around. Life is out there.
