Pros
Largest employer in the area.
Cons
HR people very arrogant, feeling that their time is more important than yours. Hotel management has ZERO mentoring or training opportunities. All training is reactive (after someone made a mistake a memo is sent out), instead of proactive (learning sessions, daily briefs, coaching, etc.) Promotions are based on tenure ONLY, not on abilities or potential. DO NOT BRING YOUR "A GAME" HERE!! You will intimidate supervisors and be alienated. To survive: Do not stand out. Blend in and wait...
Advice to Senior Management
Leadership is in Las Vegas. Local leadership very rarely greets line employees, not even in passing in the hallways. Implement ongoing coaching and training for ALL employees to participate in....
Pros
I think that the best thing about this place is the enviornment.
Cons
The GrapeVine has the worst food ever!!!!!
Advice to Senior Management
A pay raise would be nice.
Pros
Great job training.
Customers were treated well
Fun environment
Flexible schedules
Good Health benefits (when I was there)
Cons
Management evaluations of employees was baffling.
Bad behaviour is encouraged by lack of response from management.
Sometimes management would go overboard with new ideas. Ex: Kaizen was taken to ridiculous levels, placing yellow tape around the trash can so you knew where to place it. Really?
Advice to Senior Management
Another post mentioned that your staff wasn't compensated fairly. I have to agree. I prospered after I left. However, I do attribute much of my knowledge to the training I received. Get back to your roots.
Pros
They had great corporate support
Cons
when company was sold to TPG Apollo lost it's way and did not promote continue growth of department.
Advice to Senior Management
put people back on the front line to service the guests.
Pros
Harrah's provides all the necessary tools to be able to perform the job. The leader in the industry has many properties to transfer to when looking for advancement or other opportunities. Considering a company of its size, Harrahs does a decent job recognizing/awarding its top performing employees. Harrah's recognizes the importance of the relationships it has with its customers proven by the loyalty that many customers have for the company.
Cons
Harrah's does not offer "fair market value" compensation for salaried professionals. Since the economic downturn, many departments reduced headcounts through attrition or elimination and those who were left were forced to pick up the additional work without any additional compensation. Merit increase programs were restructured to barely offer standard of living increases as a reward for top performance. Many talented employees have left the company due to this lack of respect and poor judgement executed to provide investors with a healthier bottom line. Unfortunately, the diminishing talent pool will undoubtedly result in less revenue-generating and cost-saving ideas in the future. Although the job market is currently flooded with professionals looking for work, the economy WILL improve and other businesses will gobble up the talent leaving Harrah's with the leftovers. The companies that take care of their own will grow and the others will struggle.
Advice to Senior Management
Start to take better care of your salaried professionals. They are more important to the company than you think and its only a matter of time before they abandon ship. The importance of building positive relationships is not only limited to the customer. The employees, both hourly AND salaried, are a large part of the product that you offer.
Pros
Harrah's is a the largest casino company in America; therefore, there are lots of opportunities for advancement. Their benefits packages are average. Harrah's has 24/7 cafeteria, which is a huge plus because the food is FREE!!
Cons
I work in housekeeping so it is a tough job. It's ashamed to see that a billion dollars casino can't provide the necessary supplies and chemicals for the room attendants to clean the rooms the right way. Inventory is poor in the department. Also since it is a large casino with 2,500 room plus; communications between management and front of line employees sometimes get lost in translations.
Advice to Senior Management
Bring back 401(k).
Pros
- Entertainment industry is exciting and never monotonous
- Hard working employees
- Employee perks: free meals, on-site medical clinic, reasonable benefits
Cons
- Not a values based company
- Employee engagement suffers tremendously from knee-jerk reactions by senior management to conduct RIF's
- Little to no trust among management team
- Seedy work environment
Advice to Senior Management
- Truly take the time to understand what it means to be a values-based company. There are so many companies to emulate i.e. Marriott, Proctor & Gamble, Altria, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Container Store, etc.
Pros
Harrahs is a very good company to work for in the casino industry. They own many properties and offer the chance to advance.
Cons
Harrahs is a very large company. It is easy for employees to get overlooked. Corporate greed runs throughout the organization.
Advice to Senior Management
Value your front line employees more. Do not over hire to cut later. Be smart about decisions for all employees.
Pros
worldwide and will work with you on leave. Good promotion opportunity. pay scale is average. Median average salary is good.
Cons
interview process too long..... in missouri. Trying to transfer. I love harrah's and do not have many complaints against them.
Advice to Senior Management
I like the leadership at harrah's casino in las vegas nevada. I like the pay and supervisors at the flamingo
Pros
they invest a lot in employees with training tools. Not only do you learn an industry, you learn how to be a better manager and evolve into a leader
Cons
Some of the non-critical HR exercises they have you go through are daunting, inordinately time-consuming. Forms for the sake of forms. Meetings and follow-up meetings about the meeting you just had. This industry is hectic enough without heaping on such heavy doses of minutia. A little bit of a tattletale culture too
Advice to Senior Management
Not all property GMs are the same. Hold all to the same standards and keep a close eye on how they manage teams.
